NDC and the Paris Agreement • NDCs are submitted every five years to the UNFCCC secretariat. In order to enhance the ambition over time the Paris Agreement provide that successive NDCs will represent a progression compared to the previous NDC and reflect its highest possible ambition. • All Parties are requested to submit the next round of NDCs (new NDCs or updated NDCs) by 2020 and every five years thereafter (e.g. by 2020, 2025, 2030), regardless of their respective implementation time frames. • Due to COVID-19 Pandemic, NDC-2 should be submitted before 01.11.2021 2 Koronivia Work on Agriculture • The Koronivia Joint Work on Agriculture (KJWA) adopted at COP23 in November 2017 (UNFCCC, 2017; Decision 4/CP.23) • It is a landmark decision that recognizes the role of agriculture and food security in the fight against climate change. • The KJWA will work on six topics related to soils, nutrient use, water, livestock, methods and approaches to assess adaptation and socio-economic and food security impacts of climate change across the agricultural sectors • KJWA approach is missing in available Ukrainian NDC-2 Scenarios 3 Emissions from Agriculture – global picture 4 AFOLU’s contribution to NDCs: Ukraine Vs EU EU (10,3%) Ukraine (13%) ~ 30% Crop production ~ 70% Animal Farming https://ec.europa.eu/food/sites/food/files/safety/docs/f2f_action https://mepr.gov.ua/files/docs/Zmina_klimaty/2020 5 -plan_2020_strategy-info_en.pdf /Ukraine_NIR_2020%20draft.pdf “Emissions from Ag. Soils” – what is this? • Emissions from agricultural soils are mostly because the dominant form of agriculture is based on tillage. • Other emissions are accounted from use of organic fertilizer, use of synthetic fertilizer, use of crop protection, energy use in land work. Crop production activities directly produce and release atmospheric • While calculating emissions it is greenhouse gases, such as CO2 and nitrous oxide (N2O) (Smith et al., 2007). also important to get available http://www.fao.org/fileadmin/user_upload/agp/icm16.pdf) data on crop yields, use of agricultural lime and water use for irrigation 6
