Sheet 1: MRT_README
Data File Title Digest Machine Readable Table (MRT) File
Data File Description MRT files are created to increase the usability and accessibility of current and future Digest tables. The MRT files have a uniform design; this allows Digest table data to be read in a standard format and provides the table-specific metadata information pertaining to the table. Typically, each MRT file contains data from one Digest table. The MRT format is intended to facilitate access to Digest table data by statistical software programs. Those seeking to simply view the data or make a simple calculation can access these data in a traditional tabular format (see URL field provided in the file).

meta tab Presents all table-specific metadata information pertaining to the table. Please see table A below for details.
data tab Contains all the cell data in a format that is homogeneous across all Digest tables. Please see table B below for details.

Table A. List of meta tab variables and descriptions

Variable Name Description Categorical Values
digest_table_id Digest table number. Unique when using in combination with digest_table_year and digest_table_sub_id.
digest_table_year Digest table edition year
digest_table_sub_id Digest table sub-ID if one Digest table is broken into multiple subtables. If there is only one main table, this entry will have the value of “A”.
digest_table_sub_title Digest table sub title if one Digest table is broken into multiple subtables
digest_table_sub_title_note Digest table sub title note if one Digest table is broken into multiple subtables
has_se Indicates whether estimates presented in the table have standard errors True or False
deflator Deflator used in the table
table_title Digest table title
headnote Digest table headnote
stub_head Digest table stub head
general_note General note
source_note Data source note
last_prepared Time table was last prepared
digest_table_url The Uniform Resource Locator (URL) for the Digest table

row_level Concatenated row level headers separated by three colons “:::”. Seven levels of row headers are included and presented in a delimited format: the top row level is presented, followed by three colons (as a delimiter), and then the second row level is presented. This continues until all of the row level information is shown.
column_level Concatenated column level headers separated by three colons “:::”. Seven levels of column headers are included and presented in a delimited format: the first column level is presented, followed by three colons (as a delimiter), and then the second column level is presented. This continues until all of the column level information is shown.
value Data value. If the entry does not contain specific number or is blank, please check the variable “cell_note" for details.
standard_error Standard error. If the entry does not contain specific number or is blank, please check the variable “standard_error_cell_note” for details.
row_index Row identifier in numeric order starting from the first row of data to the last row from top to the bottom.
column_index Column identifier in alphabetic order starting from the first column of data to the last column from left to right.
is_total Indicates whether the row is a grand total True or False
year Year of data presented
location Geographic location For example: United States, South, Alabama
location_type The type of location For example: Country, Region, State
cell_note Reference and special notes at cell level.
standard_error_cell_note Reference and special notes at cell level for standard error.
row_level_[1-7] Concatenated row level header
row_level_[1-7]_ref_note Reference note corresponding to the row level. For example, row_level_1_ref_note is the note for row_level_1.
column_level_[1-7] Concatenated column level header
column_level_[1-7]_ref_note Reference note corresponding to the column level. For example, column_level_1_ref_note is the note for column_level_1.
