Our learning
goal:
We are learning to define the relationships between
curriculum expectations, goals and criteria to support
student learning.
We will be able to:
● Identify intended learning in curriculum expectations
● Articulate effective learning goals
● Anticipate success criteria that we can use as the foundation
for descriptive feedback and evaluation
What is to be learned?
What is the relationship between:
● Learning goals
● Curriculum expectations
● Success criteria
Curriculum Expectations
Curriculum expectations are written as statements that
describe the knowledge and skills that students are
to learn.
They include supports like front matter, discipline-specific
frameworks, and/or teacher prompts and examples.
Although these supports are helpful, they are not the
mandated curriculum.
In a curriculum document of your choosing, select one
overall expectation to work with.
Learning Goals
We are learning...so that...
Criteria for effective learning goals:
1. Clearly explains the learning.
2. Words used are age-appropriate and accommodated
for English Language Learners and Special Education
needs.
3. Broad enough so that
a. the details of how students know they have
attained the goal can be described as success
criteria
b. Multiple entry points are possible to allow for all
students to reach the goal
Success Criteria
What does is look like to have met the learning goal?
What would students know and be able to do?
Criteria for your criteria:
1. Can the criterion be expressed as a range of
performance quality? (Think of the achievement chart
levels)
2. Is the criterion a met/not yet met? If so, it wouldn’t be
useful for grading purposes but it would be good for
feedback.
3. Can you provide descriptive feedback using the
criterion?
