          • The world has an impending ‘energy crisis’. We need to quickly find alternative sources of
energy, as fossil fuels will run out in the next 50 years if we continue to use them at
current rates. Many countries have invested heavily in nuclear power, and although
Australia has no nuclear power stations it is one of the biggest suppliers of uranium for
              them.
          • Nuclear energy is an alternative energy source to fossil fuels. Although not a renewable
resource, it provides vast amounts of energy from a small amount of fuel. For example, 1
kilogram of uranium ore can produce as much energy as 100 kilograms of coal and does
so with far less of the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide being released. Is nuclear power
the future of energy, or should we be investing in other alternatives?
          • Some people have suggested that outback Australia (even the interior of Uluru!) be used
as a long-term storage site for the world’s nuclear waste. This is because of the area’s
geological stability. Students will write two letters/e-mails to a newspaper—one
supporting and one opposing the proposal.
