Lecture #12: Environmental Ethics
Prof. K.M. Passino
The Ohio State University
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering
Engineering, Ecology, and
Economics
• If your technology messes up the environment, it can affect
the health of many humans!
• Environmental ethics = the study of moral issues
concerning the environment and moral perspectives,
beliefs, and attitudes concerning those issues
• The “invisible hand”: Adam Smith, 1776, “The Wealth of
Nations:”
– Businesspersons think of only their self-interest
– “It is not from the benevolence of the butcher, the
brewer, or the baker, that we expect our dinner, but
from their regard to their own interest”
• Yet although “he intends only his own
gain”, he is “led by an invisible hand to
promote an end which has no part of his
intention”
• By pursuing his own interest he frequently
promotes that of the society more
effectually than when he really intends to
promote it
• Professionals and many businesspersons do profess to
“trade for the public good”, claiming a commitment to
hold paramount the safety, health, and welfare of the
public
• Predominantly motivated by self-interest, they also have
genuine moral concern for others
• Companies benefit society in many ways through self-
interest:
– Create companies that produce goods and services for consumers
– Competition drives quality improvements and cost reductions
– New jobs for employees and suppliers
– Wealth supports consumerism, taxes, and philanthropy
