GOALS AND OBJECTIVES
OF SEMINAR
By the conclusion of this session,
participants will be able to:
1. Describe in specific detail the purpose, goals,
and objective of a “kindness” curriculum and why
such a curriculum is an essential component in
professional identity formation.
2. Analyze the reasons why professionalism
curricula in general and this curriculum in particular
can be met with skepticism by students; and identify
specific ways in which student concerns can be
addressed
3. Apply the philosophy, strategies and approaches
presented in the seminar to their own particular
learning environments
PREMISE OF THE
KINDNESS CURRICULUM
Kindness curriculum is the brainchild of Dr.
Ralph Clayman, Dean Emeritus of UCI SoM
Support from Aaron Kheriaty (psychiatry); Johanna
Shapiro (family medicine); and Julie Youm (medical
education)

NOT trying to “teach” students to be kind –
students are already kind
Create a space in which students can think
more deeply about
The role of kindness in clinical interaction;
What gets in the way of our being kind
Depletion
Judgment
Self focus
How we can encourage ourselves and each other
to act in ways that are kind
Make a case for the importance of kindness,
empathy, compassion in the healing process
