PARENT’S ROLE IN PERSONALITY DEVELOPMENT -by Cadet Sukanya Jitendra Bhojane (Jai Hind Detachment) Personality development plays an important role in everyone’s life. An individual’s personality refers to his/her attitude, appearance, characteristics, mindset and behavior towards others. Personality development helps an individual make a mark of his/her own. It creates one’s own identity in the world. Right from the childhood time, children are given guidance at each and every phase by their parents. Parents play the most important role in the overall development of their child. Parenting is an ongoing job. It is not something you can get away from once the time comes, as children need their parents from time to time, to stay on the right track. It is the right guidance of the parents that develops the character of the child. The process of parenting and child development goes hand in hand. Parents should teach the lessons of assertiveness, maturity and importance of being physically fit. “As you sow so shall you reap.” The proverb that says future consequences are inevitably shaped by present actions. Similarly, whatever values parents sow in their children from the childhood are alternately imbibed in their personality while growing up. Positive parenting improves cognitive, social and problem-solving skills in children helping them to be better humans. Children from their early age observe parents interaction and how arguments are settled in the family. This will help them in their socio-cultural development. Accepting failures and overcoming them, understanding them, accepting feedback concepts which comes under the mental development of the child depends upon the parenting styles moulding their minds. Along with all these, physical development plays a very important role in the physical development of child. Exercising regularly, being a team player, having a right diet, growing in an play-and-learn environment results in the physical development of the child. The parents should get up early in the morning and go out for a walk. If they begin their activities during the early hours, then their children learn the importance of being punctual. It is the responsibility of parents to give a mental support to their child by being emotionally present and motivating them at each and every phase of their life. Parents should teach them to become matured and face the adverse situations of life boldly. After an age of 10 years of children, parents must treat their child as their friend making them comfortable to share their problems, funs, experiences creating a healthy parent-to-child relationship with them. Also they must trust their child and try to understand them with their own interest and not pressurizing them to do things according to the parents interest, which makes an effect on their child’s mental health. The parents should be confident about their children, so that children become confident of themselves. Personality gives a brief information of an individual. Assertiveness, maturity, emotional intelligence and physical energy along with the parents guidance helps an individual to develop an attractive and strong personality and helps survive a long run.
