Westmoor High School Fashion Design and Construction 1 Syllabus Fall 2019 - Ms. Cabarle Course Description and Objectives: Fashion Design and Construction 1 is an introductory course based on CTE Model Curriculum Standards and Home Economics Careers and Technology Standards. Students will be able to create sketches, designs, and construct articles of clothing. This course will provide a comprehensive understanding of the elements and principles of fashion design as applied to textiles and fashion and use them to evaluate their own designs as well as the designs of well-known designers. This course will also explore manufactured and natural made textiles and their use in fashion as well as the characteristics, production and maintenance of textiles. Students will explore the relationship between American historical events and fashion styles. Each student will keep a portfolio of their designs, sketches and written work. Assessment Methods: 1. Written tests 2. Research slide presentations 3. Portfolio of original fashion designs and renderings 4. Elements and Principles of Design notebook 5. Textiles sample notebook 6. Instructor and self critique of garment construction Course Units: Unit 1: Introduction to Fashion Unit 2: Color Theory Unit 3: Introduction to Garment Construction Unit 4: Elements and Principles of Fashion Design Unit 4: Garment Construction - Pajama Pants Unit 5: The Art of Fashion and Drawing Fashion Figures Unit 6: Garment Construction - Messenger Bag Unit 7: Textiles Unit 8: Garment Construction - Zipper Project Unit 9: Historical and Cultural Context Unit 10:Garment Construction - Student Choice Project Unit 11: Designer Research Project Unit 12:Garment Construction -Student Choice Project Expectations and Requirements - Students must: ● Maintain notes, vocabulary, and handouts in Fashion Design Binder ● Collaborate with classmates when necessary ● Complete written work, projects and pass tests/quizzes ● Bring supplies to class every day and participate in daily activities ● Be able to self manage their time on projects ● Mandatory end-of-the-year Fashion Show: Tentative date May 14th 3:00pm-4:00pm Homework and Classwork Policy: No work may be made up unless the student has an excused absence or if prior arrangements have been made with the teacher. All work must be made up within a week of the absence. No make-up work will be accepted after this period. It is the student’s responsibility to obtain missed work. Late Work: Work that is turned in one day late will be reduced by 10% and work turned in two days late will be reduced by 20%. After the 2nd day there will be NO late work accepted. Grading Policy: Grading will be distributed using the following scale: 90% + = A 80%+ = B 70%+ = C 60%+ = D Below 60% = F Students grades will consist of the following: ● Notes/Worksheets on each unit ● Presentation/Project on assigned skills and/or Unit (major portion of grade) Classroom Norms: 1. Respect classmates and teacher. Do not disrupt the learning process of others. 2. No eating allowed while working on projects 3. Be on time to class 4. Follow directions and ask questions 5. Clean up after yourself - leave your workspace clean All other rules of Westmoor High School will be followed in this classroom.
