It hauled in $50 million during its opening weekend, almost making back its $52 million budget, according to The Hollywood Reporter. That $50 million total makes it No. 2 among the music movies with the biggest opening weekends. 10. The Soloist Opening weekend box office: $9.7 million 9. It took the better part of a decade to go from concept to finished product. 2010: Queen guitarist Brian May tells the BBC that Sacha Baron Cohen is playing singer Freddie Mercury in the movie. 2011: In an interview with the Daily Record, May says the rest of his bandmates are hesitant to make the movie. 2013: Cohen steps aside after some dreaded “creative differences.” 2015: Anthony McCarten replaces Oscar-winner Peter Morgan as the screenwriter. 2016: Rami Malek joins the cast to play Freddie Mercury. 2017: The production company fires Bryan Singer as director, but he’s still credited with the finished product. What do the reviews say about Bohemian Rhapsody? Spoiler alert! The Bohemian Rhapsody reviews are mixed. The film gets mixed reviews, but it’s among the music movies with the biggest opening weekends. | 20th Century Fox Rolling Stone reviewer Peter Travers gushes about Malek’s performance, writing, “Screw the film’s flaws, you don’t want to miss his performance.” The movie earns a so-so 60% fresh rating at review site Rotten Tomatoes. Reviewing for Slate, Jeffrey Bloomer writes that Bohemian Rhapsody is fun and infuriating all at once. However, Roger Ebert’s website and The New York Times were less forgiving. It earned a 1-star review from Ebert reviewer Sheila O’Malley, while the Times writes that “the film seems engineered to be as unmemorable as possible.” Ouch. Following the success of Bohemian Rhapsody and the star Rami Malek’s Oscar winning performance of Freddie Mercury, the rumors of a Bohemian Rhapsody sequel didn’t seem that far fetched. Will they make a Bohemian Rhapsody 2? Rami Malek | John Lamparski/WireImage Bohemian Rhapsody‘s story could continue Mercury and Queen’s story has always been fascinating and the filmmakers did an exceptional job bringing it to the screen last year in Bohemian Rhapsody. The movie ended on a high note with an epic recreation of Queen’s showstopping Live Aid performance in 1985. Is there more story to tell though? By the movie’s end, Mercury had shared with his bandmates that he had AIDS, they reunited to perform again, and the frontman had reconnected with Jim Hutton, the man he would live the rest of his days with. Mercury also mended his relationship with his family. What more could a sequel cover? Some would argue that the years following Live Aid as well as the band’s continuation after Mercury’s passing could fill a second movie. Bohemian Rhapsody ended with this statement: “Freddie Mercury died of AIDS-related pneumonia on the 24th November 1991. He was 45 years old.” Additionally, Bohemian Rhapsody was nominated for Best Picture, won four Oscars, and was the highest-grossing music biopic ever, earning $850 million, so a sequel could be a successful endeavor. Rumors of a Bohemian Rhapsody 2 make the rounds According to a Page Six exclusive, Rudi Dolezal, a director of dozens of Queen’s music videos noted that the sequel was “being heavily discussed in the Queen family.” Dolezal shared of Queen’s manager Jim Beach: “I’m sure he plans a sequel that starts with Live Aid.” The music video director teamed up with Queen around the time of the Live Aid performance and went on to do 30 videos for the band and its members, including Mercury’s “These are the Days of Our Lives” in 1991. Mercury died that same year. Dolezal’s comment about a sequel seemed to support Queen guitarist Brian May hinting at a followup, as he noted last year, “I think Live Aid is a good point to leave it. Who knows, there might be a sequel.” Page Six further reports that Malek said he had not heard anything about a sequel, nor had Queen’s record label. There will be a special airing on ABC in April, however, titled The Show Must Go On: The Queen + Adam Lambert Story. Bohemian Rhapsody sequel rumors are shut down Before the idea of Bohemian Rhapsody 2 got too much hype, a publicist for producer Graham King said there is no truth to the Bohemian Rhapsody sequel rumors, according to Slash Film. There is more of Freddie Mercury’s story to be told In the absence of a Bohemian Rhapsody sequel, there is still more of Mercury’s story to be told, as Dolezal revealed that he’s writing a book called My Friend, Freddie and plans to release interviews he had with Mercury in a film Freddie Mercury: In His Own Words. It's always easier to learn a song that you're already familiar with, so what would be better than to entertain yourself with your favorite holiday tunes while you practice? When playing the piano, several different pieces of information come together to create the music that you hear. Muscle coordination and dexterity allow pianists to play with different dynamics, articulations, and speeds. Music symbols are helpful tools in music notation that allow the composer to express how the music should sound. Note pitch, rhythm, articulation and dynamic are a few of the many symbols used in a composition that indicate how to play the music. The vertical position of note heads on the staff denotes pitch, while the duration of a note’s sound is expressed with note color, note stems, and stem flags. In music, notes indicate sound. But sometimes, silence is a part of music too. A music rest is a symbol that represents silence or the absence of a music note. Similar to music notes, music rests are written in various styles to show their different rhythmic lengths. An accidental is a musical symbol placed beside a note that creates a change in the note's pitch. Accidentals include sharps, flats, and naturals. Double-accidentals include the double-sharp and double-flat. Learn about the different types of music accidentals in order to identify them correctly. The key signature is a series of accidentals written at the beginning of a music staff and is used to express the key in which a song is written. In other words, it tells you which notes will have sharps or flats throughout a musical composition. Key signatures can have single or multiple sharps or flats. The time signature looks like a fraction and appears at the beginning of a piece of music. Time signatures organize beats into measures and work alongside the tempo to create the rhythm of a song. Sometimes, a single piece of music can contain several time signatures, indicating a change in the beat structure. The tempo defines the speed of the music and is measured by the beats per minute (BPM). The BPM of a song may be written using metronome marks or Italian tempo terms that are closely associated with a metronome range. Some music pieces detail a precise metronome marking, while others use a broad command. An understanding of both tempo and BPM is helpful in music performance. Symbols and lines placed around noteheads and note groups change the way they sound and create a relationship with the surrounding notes. This concept is called “articulation,” and is modified in piano music using a variety of articulation marks. Note ornaments are used to simplify the notation of certain techniques, which would otherwise complicate and crowd the sheet music. For example, a glissando is when you run your finger across the entire keyboard, hitting every note along the way. To write this out in notation would be tedious for the composer and the pianist. Instead, note ornaments and embellishments help abbreviate the notation of the desired effect. Musical dynamics control the volume of a song and may be signified by words, symbols or both. Dynamics mark the relative changes in intensity and do not express precise decibel levels. Understanding the various dynamic and volume commands help bring expressive volume elements to the music. A repeat bar is a musical symbol that resembles a final barline with two dots in the middle staff spaces. A passage written between two repeat bars will be played at least two times, and any variant of this will be explained using volta brackets, or “time bars.” Repeat signs and volta brackets are common commands in music composition. Segno and coda marks belong to a system used to express complex repetitions which cannot be expressed using simple repeat barlines. They may seem tricky at first, but rest assured, they make sheet music much simpler and at times can help avoid several page-turns. Navigating segno and coda marks becomes simple once they are familiar. Musical symbols such as 8va and 15ma indicate that a note or passage will be played in a different octave than in the one they are written. These commands make it easier to read very high or low notes that would otherwise be written using ledger lines. Learn to recognize these common octave commands. Learning how to play piano may take time but is manageable with proper training. While it is possible to learn how to play by ear, it is important for beginners to get familiar with music notes by practicing pitch and keys off of sheet music, instructional books or online learning tools. This will go hand in hand with understanding piano keys and practicing classic basics like "Do-Re-Mi." One trick to learning piano is by playing easier songs, such as Christmas carols, children's songs or music that you love and are passionate about. Understanding and practicing sheet music for piano beginners may be a challenge at first but is a must in order to achieve playing piano at an intermediate level and beyond in the long run. Some basic piano knowledge to understand is as follows: The Staff: The set of five horizontal lines and four spaces representing a musical pitch. Treble Clef: The music symbol known as the G clef, located above middle C on the second-lowest line of the staff. Bass Clef: The symbol of music on the fourth line of the staff indicating that it relates to the F next below middle C. Music Notes: Notes are signs used in music to represent the duration and pitch of a sound. Chords: Chords include a group of notes together as a form of harmony. Often, there are two or three or more chords in music which sound simultaneous together. Scales: A scale is a set of musical notes ordered by frequency or pitch. In piano, there are 12 keys in an octave; thus, there are 36 scales total unless you are adding chromatic scales, which would total to 48 scales. Finger Placement: How your fingers rest on specific keys. The correct hand position for piano depends on the type of finger. For example, the thumb finger may go on middle C.
