Wherever you used outside information include a citation. The citation should be the author’s last name in parentheses. • If no author is given, put the first few words of the title in quotation marks in parentheses. Quoting, Paraphrasing, and Summarizing • Purdue Owl • Who uses quotations? • Use quotations sparingly. You use a quotation when you want to highlight the words themselves. • Make sure that quotations flow with your text. • It might be helpful for you to use quotations when you are addressing contrary views. This way it becomes clear that you are not distorting your opponents’ arguments. Quoting, Paraphrasing, and Summarizing • Do not begin or end paragraphs with quotations. • Quotations should flow with your own text. • You should introduce quotations before the quotation marks and provide additional commentary in the sentence or sentences after the quotation marks.
