Aim of Workshop Understanding of Newport Positive Futures How we have met challenges of funders Change from local authority to trust How embedded Sport for Social Change in Community Safety arena Background Using Sport as a tool to engage at risk young people – Sport for social change. Part of the national programme funded via Home Office 2002 – 2013 (1 of 2 projects in Wales). Delivered via local authority sports development dept from 2002 – 2015 (March). Locally sourced funding 2013 – Gwent Police Crime Commissioner. Newport LIVE established in April 2015 as a not for profit company limited by guarantee and a registered UK charity – replacing LA Sport & Leisure. Programme delivered via Newport LIVE – hub centre and responsible for regional roll out of programme. The Model - Positive Futures Agency Referrals Anti 1:1 Social Behaviour, Ref education, Mentoring, erra support to young people Alternative ls Education, Targeted Barnardos, Youth Groups Friday Night Offending Services, Projects, Street Social Services team, Community Aftercare, Prisons Sessions Diversionary Activity Doorstep Sport / Clubs Positive Futures Aim “Help communities to be safer places by ensuring that all young people have the opportunity to take part in sport and physical activity”. Objectives Ensure all young people have the opportunity to take part in Sport and physical activity. Provide positive alternatives to Anti-social Behaviour for young people living in deprived communities across Newport and Gwent. Provide local provision at minimal or no cost for participants. Offer voluntary and leadership opportunities. Offer qualifications and accreditations to young people interested. Provide role models and support packages for young people at risk. Help communities to be safer places.
