Introducing Myself
•History of academic mediocrity – failed my college track
exams, my university entrance exams, graduated well in the
bottom half of my class, failed my master’s degree exam –
Broadening student-centered assessment measures
•Watching my doctoral supervisor – giving me ‘bad’
inconvenient news in a way that I knew was in my own best
interests
Ethical use of teacher power
Relational underpinnings to teaching
A Tool to Combine w/ Discussion Boards – Todays
Meet
•Please go to:
www.todaysmeet.com/wtcc
•Sign in by creating a nickname for yourself
USING ONLY NUMBERS! (birthday, favorite
year, random numbers etc.)
•Please post a greeting so we know the
system is working
Combining Todays Meet with(DB’s) -
Asynchronously
•Students ANONYMOUSLY post reactions, questions, criticisms,
confusions regarding each module’s content, assignments etc. You
check this feed once a day &, if need be, post responses to everyone
via TodaysMeet, REMIND or the DB
•Anonymity means issues of race, racism, microaggressions are raised.
•Anonymity means students can ask ‘dumb’ questions about the
course, clarify assignment instructions or query grading policies with
no fear of embarrassment & without risk.
•You ask a question once a week for course evaluation – eg. what’s the
most engaging / boring / helpful / puzzling activity or content?
•You then summarize responses & disclose any changes you’re making
Combining Todays Meet with(DB’s) -
Synchronously
• As you use Adobe Connect (Zoom) a Todays Meet feed is open. Unlike
the ‘chat’ function on Adobe this is ANONYMOUS. Students can say
anything they wish, or ask ‘dumb’ questions with no risk or fear of
embarrassment. This is CRUCIAL if students don’t understand content
or something bothers them, feels racist.
• You can open a session by posing a content question to which all
students respond. This provides an accurate sense of the perspectives
& levels of understanding students bring to the topic of the day.
• You can pose a process question if you think problems are emerging –
What am I doing that most bothers you? What’s most confusing about
the assignment or my instructions? How am I addressing race or
diversity? What change in the class would be helpful to you?
