                  PHYSICS 709: FALL SEMESTER
The topics for Physics 709 are divided into four sections, which
             we discuss in turn.
             1. Introduction to Quantum Mechanics of 2-level Systems. In
this section we introduce quantum theory at a level that even
students with no prior exposure to the subject can grasp. 4
             weeks.
             2. Quantum Computers and Quantum Information Processing.
Here we introduce one- and two-qubit gates, quantum circuits.
             (2 weeks).
             3. Quantum Algorithms. Deutsch and Simon algorithms,
background for the Shor algorithm, Shor algorithm, Grover
             algorithm. (5 weeks).
             4. Quantum Error Correction. 5-qubit and Steane error
correction codes, stabilizer codes. (3 weeks).
                  PHYSICS 779: SPRING SEMESTER
Section 1. Quantum Software (7 weeks)
Section 1 (a). Advanced quantum circuit theory. Clifford group and Gottesman-Knill
        theorem, Mathematica code.

Section 1 (b). Density matrices, probability distributions, T1 and T2. Sources of noise and
        its effect on actual machines.

Section 1 (c). Advanced error correction. Master equation, Kraus operators, fault
tolerance, randomized benchmarking, gate set tomography.

Section 2. Quantum Hardware (7 weeks)
        (1) Trapped neutral atoms, (2) Single photons, (3) Trapped ions, (4) Nitrogen vacancy (NV)
centers in diamond, (5) Superconducting qubits using Josephson junctions. This choice is
dictated partly by breadth of education and partly by what is practical in the educational lab
course. Sec. 2 is specifically designed to segue into Physics 707, the summer lab course.
