What is the chosen handwriting scheme at Mount Carmel? ◦ We use a programme called ‘Letterjoin’ to teach and support our children with developing the skills necessary to develop their own fluent, legible handwriting script. ◦ We always begin with the correct pre cursive handwriting and support children to form each letter correctly in turn. ◦ This includes letter formation of both upper and lower case. What terminology do I need to be aware of? ◦ There are a number of handwriting terms that we regularly use with the children at Mount Carmel that are important to learn. These include: ◦ ‘Lead in lines’ which the children know as the curved line which enters each lower case letter. ◦ Capital letters do not have lead in lines. They stand independently from all other letters. ◦ All writing starts on the line. Children are often reminded that all lower case letters begin at the same point on the line, however they are formed. This ensures consistency and improves legibility. ◦ ‘Letter families’ You may hear your child talk about letter families. Children are taught letters in groups with other letters that are formed in similar ways: ◦ Curly caterpillar family ◦ One armed robot family ◦ Long ladder family How do I access Letterjoin from home? ◦ To log into Letterjoin, type the website into your browser: Next type in our school username and password as shown: If you are accessing the site via a tablet, please swipe a capital L here:
