My leadership style is
the Servant
Leadership Model.
This leadership style is
always trying to look
out for the best
interest of others.
What is the Servant Leadership
Style?
• A servant leader is said to be a servant
first.
• The primary goal is to grow the
knowledge of their followers, and look
out for the well-being of the community
they surround themselves with.
• In this leadership style, the needs of
others are placed before their own.
• The servant leader strives to develop
others to perform at the highest ability.
(Greenleaf,
2016).
• Servant leaders are motivated by the desire IMPORTANT
to serve others.
• Communication and decision making are TRAITS OF
essential. A SERVANT
– This is accomplished by active listening.
• Allows for followers to feel valued, LEADER
encouraged, and cared for.
• Integrity and trust are fundamental values
of the servant leader.
• Competence is the last value that is
essential for a servant leader.
– Followers can trust that the servant
leader is competent in the skills and
knowledge needed for the job.
(Washington, Sutton, & Field, 2006).
HOW I • As nurses we generally place
POSSESS THIS others’ needs before our own.
• Nursing has taught me the
LEADERSHIP importance of communication
STYLE and listening.
• I have learned to have
empathy for others.
• I have learned to become
competent in my skill set.
• These traits have allowed me
to become a nursing leader,
and now grow into a health
care provider.
LEADERSHIP TRAITS
ACQUIRED FROM THIS COURSE
• Emotional Intelligence
– This is one’s ability to observe the emotions of themselves and others,
understand these emotions, and use this observation towards effective
decisions making and actions (Ledlow & Stephens, 2018).
– This trait is important for communication with patients and other
community members.
– For example, working on a DNP project or visiting with a new patient.
• Cultural Competence
– Ledlow and Stephens (2018), describe this as being culturally aware,
diverse, and understanding the beliefs and values of others.
– This trait is important, especially in rural areas of health care,
potentially where my DNP project could take place.
