Physical and Chemical
Properties
Physical Properties
• A PHYSICAL PROPERTY is a property of matter
that can be observed or measured without
changing the composition.
• Examples:
–Copper conducts electricity. Conductivity is a
physical property.
–Water is a liquid. States of matter are physical
properties.
–Gold has a density of 19.3 g/mL. Density is a
physical property.
–What other physical properties can you name?
• Take a look at a Twix bar. What are some
of the physical properties of the
wrapper?
• What are some of the physical properties
of the candy?
Chemical Properties
• A CHEMICAL PROPERTY is a property of matter
that can be measured or observed ONLY by
changing the composition of the material.
• Examples: reactivity, pH, radioactivity
–Hydrochloric acid has a low pH. Hydrochloric acid
is…an acid. Go figure.
–Vinegar reacts with baking soda to form CO .
2
–Hydrogen gas is highly flammable.
