What are the compulsory Courses that must be taken in Grade 11? All grade 11 students MUST take: English Math Religion The level that you pick will depend on whether you have the interest in going to University, College or Work after graduation Make sure that you have one course for each category – needed for graduation Group 1 English or French as a second language A native language A classical or international language Social science and the humanities Canadian and world studies Guidance and career education Cooperative education Group 2 health and physical education business studies French as a second language Cooperative education Group 3 Science (grade 11 or 12) Technological education French as a second language Computer science Cooperative education If you are interested in going to University You MUST take – Grade 11 University English NBE3U Make sure that you keep all your doors open: The course codes are very important For those students wanting to go to University, or to College for a Degree program - yours courses MUST have a U or M in them Example: Math - MRC3U for science programs, business program, etc Sciences: Physics SPH 3U, Chemistry SCH3U Biology SBI3U - These courses keep the doors open for all math, science courses at a university level – Engineering, Life Science etc. Note: Chemistry is the foundation for all science courses. You may want to pair Biology with Chemistry or Physics with Chemistry. Going to University What happens if you hate math or struggle with math? No problem!! You can still go to university, if that is what you want. Yet, you still need a third math course for graduation. I would recommend that you take Functions and Applications – MCF3M and this course will keep your door open for the grade 12 Data Management Course MDM4U that will be useful for courses like Psychology, Sociology and other Art Programs at a University level. Please note that if you took grade 10 applied math – the mark needs to be high enough for you to be able to handle the grade 11 math course. Going to University Remember that you need to take a total of 8 credits in grade 11 What else can you take? This is a great time to take a 2 credit co-op and explore an interest that you have for you future. You most likely will not have the luxury of co-op in Grade 12 Once again, remember that the courses that you take MUST be University coded with the 5th unit containing a U or M Example: CGF3M or CLU 3U Your grade 11 marks from all the U and M courses will be looked at for early acceptance by some universities. Open courses DO NOT count towards your University acceptance. Note: You will find Colleges that offer degree programs, will have the same the requirements as the universities with U and M courses
