SUBJECT OVERVIEW
• Leaving certificate physics follows junior cert science, covering more topics
to a greater depth
• Science, technology and society (STS) is an integral part of the syllabus and
students become aware of the applications of physics in the everyday world
• Students also develop an understanding of the scientific method and the
ability to observe, to think logically and to communicate effectively
LEAVING CERT PHYSICS IS
COMPOSED OF FIVE MAIN SECTIONS
• Optics and waves
• Heat and temperature
• Mechanics
• Electricity
• Modern physics
One of the following options must be taken (HL only)
• Particle physics
• Applied Electricity
There are also 24 mandatory experiments and students are required to keep a record of
this work.
IS PHYSICS FOR YOU?
• It is for students interested in a career in any mathematical or scientific
discipline
• It is for students interested in how things work
• It is for students that enjoy maths, although taking higher level maths at
leaving cert level is not a requirement

ASSESSMENT
Leaving cert physics is assessed by one terminal examination paper at both
ordinary and higher levels that is 3 hours in duration
Section A
• Students must answer 3 out of 4 questions (40 marks each)
• Questions are based on mandatory experiments
Section B
• Students must answer 5 out of 8 questions (56 marks each)
• Questions are spread across the five sections of the course
