GOLDEN Before you try to solve any problem RULE!!! dealing with mean, median, mode, or range you MUST put the numbers in ORDER in a number line from LEAST to GREATEST and then begin to solve the problem! 1st MEAN The “mean” is also known as the “average” in a set of numbers. First you add up all the numbers in a number line and then divide the answer by the amount of numbers you just added. Example: 1, 3, 5, 7 1 + 3 + 5 + 7 = 16 16 / 4 = Answer: 4 **TRICK** Mean is the meanest because it takes the most math to figure out! MEDIAN The “median” is the “middle” number in the list of numbers. Example: 2, 3, 3, 5, 7, 8, 9 Answer: 5 *If there is an odd amount of numbers the median is the middle number. *If there is an even amount of numbers, to find the median take and add the middle two numbers and then divide by 2. Example: 2, 3, 3, 5, 7, 8, 9, 10 5 + 7 = 12 12 / 2 = Answer: 6 ***TRICK*** Think of the median of a highway or the middle of the highway! MODE The “mode” is that number which appears the “most” times. Example: 1, 1, 2, 3, 4, 4, 4, 5, 6 Answer: 4 ***There can be more than one mode only if they are listed the same amount of times. Example: 1, 1, 2, 3, 3, 4, 5, 6 Answer: 1 and 3 ***TRICK*** Think of Mode…MO…MOst often! RANGE The “range” is the “distance” between the lowest and highest number. Range is found by subtracting the highest number from the lowest number. Example: 1, 3, 4, 5, 5, 6, 7, 8 8 – 1 = Answer: 7 ***TRICK*** Think of a shooting range… you have to find the distance between your highest shot and your lowest shot!
