Why is this topic
important?
Not being able to study an entire population is why we
need inferential statistics!
The GOAL of statistical inference is to understand
something about populations using sample data.
For example: we may wish to know a population proportion
(symbol = p) or a population mean (symbol = m). Often the
goal of clinical trials is to compare groups on population
proportion (e.g., post operative delirium) or population
mean (e.g., length of stay after surgery).
