                         About this presentation…
 Please read the first two slides in this presentation.
The first slide discusses the importance of Ethos in
public speaking. Although Ethos is important in all
types of public address, it is especially important in
self-introduction speeches. As you watch each
speech in this presentation, think about how each
speaker established (or attempted to establish)
                             Ethos in their presentation.
 Additionally, read the “Suggestions for Critique”
slide after each speech. Although you do not have
to formally answer these questions, they are
important to think about as you evaluate each
                             speech.
                    Ethos
                     Ethos is a speaker’s reputation,
                       appearance, personality, credibility, and
                       character.
 Not surprisingly, audience connect the
most with speakers that that likable and
                       trustworthy.
 Out of the three pillars in public
speaking, ethos is the largest component
                       of the self-introduction speech.
                   Suggestions for Critique
 Theme: Is there an overall theme to
                      their speech?
                    Introduction/Hook: Do they
                      immediately capture your attention?
 Organization: Does the speech flow, or
does it seem to jump around?
 Delivery: Does the speaker appear
confident? Is their voice steady? Do
                      they maintain eye contact?
 Conclusion: Do they wrap up their
                      speech “neatly”?
                         The Self-Introduction
                         Speech: Four Examples
 Watch each one of the following speeches.
Remember to consult the “Suggestions for Critique”
