MODULE 18 SUPERVISION FOR SURVIVOR- CENTERED CASE MANAGEMENT Gain a foundational knowledge of the purpose and function of supervision. Understand how to utilize OBJECTIVES various supervisory tools to evaluate performance. Describe the different ways in which supervision can be conducted. WHAT IS SUPERVISION? Supervision is the ongoing, regular meeting of a supervisor and a supervisee to assess and monitor skills and practice in a supportive manner. Role of the supervisor: • Provide support, advice, direction and quality oversight to case management services • Ensure staff are trained and prepared for their caseworker role • Be on-hand for consultation in emergency situations SUPERVISION: THREE FUNCTIONS Supportive : Support for practical and psychological elements of the caseworker role Educational : Encourage reflection and exploration of the work and develop new insights, perceptions, and ways of working Administrative : The promotion and maintenance of good standards of work – making good practice a standard way of working SUPERVISION: PURPOSE • Ensure that helpers and service providers are able to put knowledge and skills from training into practice • Provide staff with the opportunity to discuss their work and receive constructive feedback • Provide staff with a forum to debrief—especially important to prevent secondary traumatization • Monitor and manage staff stress • Provide an ongoing opportunity for staff to reflect on their personal values, beliefs and behaviors and how these impact their work with survivors. • Provide further training opportunities.
