THE CONTRIBUTION OF THEATRE AND DANCE
Contribution to Human Development
• Every person has the fundamental human right to participate in the cultural life of
the community and enjoy the arts; right to freedom of creative expression
• Theatre and dance are needed to affirm and celebrate identities, interrogate world
views, express cultural diversity, grow empathy, build understanding and solidarity
between people and communities
• Personal need for the arts for self-expression, catharsis, mental health and well-
being; particularly in challenging circumstances as was the case under apartheid
and is being seen again now under COVID19.
• Numerous studies show the importance of the arts in the development of children
from early childhood into and across schooling and tertiary education; we have
compulsory Creative arts in schools, though there have been problems with
implementation.
• Creativity, communication, collaboration and critical thinking are considered
st
essential to meet 21 century challenges and to engage with 4IR productively; the
arts are the best mechanism for embedding these skills and need to be introduced
from an early age.
.
THE CONTRIBUTION OF THEATRE AND DANCE
Contribution to Social Development
• Theatre and dance offers engaging, accessible and productive interventions to
address social ills, benefitting marginalised and disadvantaged communities and
society at large
• Theatre and dance is used successfully for particular agendas in prisons, schools,
industrial settings, or with particular groupings e.g. sex workers, abused women etc.
• Capacity to educate, inspire common purpose and hope for the future, change
behaviour and attitudes, and build consensus in society across diverse groupings
• Theatre and Dance as tools of advocacy – “weapon of the struggle” pre 1994, post-
1994 addressing xenophobia, HIV-AIDS etc.
• The use of theatre and dance to educate and uplift broader society has been very
strong in South Africa, and we are considered world leaders in applied theatre
