CHAPTER III
RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
This chapter discusses the methodology of the research related to: (1)
research design (2) subject of the study (3) data collection (4) instrumention (5)
data analysis
3.1 Research Design
Research is an important way to get new facts or additional information. In
this research, there are certain activities that have to be performed. In this case,
methodology is necessarily needed to make the research easy to conduct or to be
effective. In this study, the researcher uses quantitative because there are several
techniques of conducting research which guide and enable the researcher to
collect and analyze data.
Leedy and Ormrod (2010:95) alleged that quantitative researchers seek
explanations and predictions that will generalize to other persons and places. The
method used in this study was quantitative because this study was related to
number and statistical data. Creswell (2014:27) states that quantitative research
identifies a research problem based on trends in the fields or on the need to
explain why something occurs. The statement above shows that quantitative
research is the systematic empirical investigation of observable phenomena via
statistical, mathematical, or computational techniques. The quantitative research
16
design was used in this study because it was intended to know about the students’
interest in choosing Business English course.
3.2 Subjects of the Study
According to Djunaidi and Fauzan (2009:105), “population is a large
group of individuals, objects, or events. Sample is a smaller group that taken or
drawn from the population.”
The subjects of this study were the sixth semester students who joined
Business English I on 2016/2017 academic year, which was one of the elective
courses offered in the curriculum of English Department. The total number of the
students was 104 students who were grouped in Class A (58) and Class B (46).
This study took all students as the subjects to investigate.
3.3 Research Instrument
The instrument used in this study was a questionnaire, to know the factor
which make interest the sixth semester students in choosing Business English
course. The written questionnaire is a typically more efficient and practical and
allows for the use of a large sample. It is widely employed in education research.
Further advantages of the technique are that standard instructions are given to all
subjects ant the personal appearance mood or conduct of the investigator will ace
color the results (Ary:2002).
A structured questionnaire contains the question and the alternative
answers. Unstructured questionnaire does not include suggested answers (Ary,
17
2002:175). In this study, the researcher used combination between structured and
unstructured questionnaire since both of the types facilitated the researcher and
the respondents. In the structured questionnaire, the researcher felt easier to
analyze the result of questionnaire. In unstructured questionnaire, the researcher
facilities the respondents to give alternative answer in the blank columns that is
provident by the researcher.
The questionnaire consisted of a set of statements which a respondent had
to respond. From 21 statements, there were 11 statements that related to the factor
of students’ interest in choosing Business English course and 10 statements that
related to the students’ expectation in taking Business English course. In
responding to the questionnaire, the respondents had to check the best preference
which represented how they felt about the topics included in the scale. The
questionnaire was given to the students and it was written in Indonesia Language
to avoid the students’ misunderstanding.
3.4 Data Collection
In this study, the data were in the form of students’ answer or responds of
the questionnaire. To collect the data the following steps were taken;
1. Constructing the questionnaire which consisted of 21 items related to the
topic of the research.
2. Asking permission to Business English lecturers to distribute the
questionnaire to the students.
18
3. Distributing the questionnaire to the students in sixth semester of
University of Muhammadiyah Malang. Based on the schedule of Business
English class, class A on Monday at 08.40 a.m and class B on Thursday at
13.00 p.m. The researcher distribute questionnaires after class, class A at
10.20 a.m and class B at 14.40 p.m. The researcher gives 10 minutes to
respondents to complete the questionnaires and collect at the time.
3.5 Data Analysis
Data analysis is an important part in this research because by using this
method, the researcher can conclude the result of this research. The researcher
analyzed the interview that consists of 21 items with five indicators for the
questionnaire. They were very high interest (80-100), high interest (70-79),
moderate (60-69), low interest (50-59), and very low interest (0-49). The data
were analyzed by using a rating scale. Ary(in Kurniawati,2004) says that rating
scale involves assessments by one person of another behavior or performance
.Typically the rater is asked to place the person being rated at some point on a
category that describes he or she characteristic behavior.
The procedures of data analysis of this study were stated below:
1. After collecting the data, they were classified based on the purpose of the
study.
2. Describing the data to know about the factors which make students in sixth
semester interested in choosing Business English course.
3. Describing the students’ expectation in choosing Business English course.
