SENRGy booklist 2016-17
SENRGY INTRODUCTORY BOOKLIST
2016-17 ACADEMIC YEAR
This is an introductory booklist for our undergraduate courses and has been created in
response to requests for guidance regarding the purchasing of textbooks.
Books are listed within sections which relate to your specific degrees and each list has been
produced by the Course Director and team on those degrees. Please note that we have
chosen books which are suitable for use during the three (or four) years of your degree
course. However, you need to be aware that this list shows basic texts only and is by no
means exhaustive. Some of the Course Directors have attached what they call a “long
list”, from which you can choose some texts. Others give you an idea of which books
you should purchase and indicate what texts will be suitable purely in the first
year/which books you would be more likely to use in your second or subsequent years
and which books would be suitable across all the three (or four) years.
At Bangor University we expect you to read widely but it is sometimes the case that we can't
recommend specific books which will cover the majority of a course (or even a module).
Further more detailed booklists will be made available by individual module co-ordinators. If
you have a query about any of the books which appear within the sections, please contact
the relevant Course Director(s).

BA/BSc/MGeog GEOGRAPHY
Course Director: Dr Graham Bird (GB) - g.bird@bangor.ac.uk
The list below contains a selection of texts that would be of particular use to Geography
students across both ‘human’ and ‘physical’ aspects of the subject. Several of the texts would
be relevant to all years of study, whilst others are particularly suited to Year 1. Copies of the
texts in this list are in the Bangor University library; however, you may wish to purchase
selected titles on the list. Good quality used copies can often be found via any good second
hand bookseller or online retailer. If you want to invest in a few books (or persuade someone
to buy them for you) I would recommend Holden (2012) or Smithson et al. (2008) for the
‘physical’ aspects, Cloke et al. (2013) for ‘human’ aspects and Kneale (2011) for the study
skills aspects (earlier editions are fine). See you in September! GB

BSc/MFor FORESTRY
BSc CONSERVATION WITH FORESTRY
Course Director Dr James Walmsley (JW) – j.walmsley@bangor.ac.uk
Tree identification starts in the first term and you will need your own tree identification book.
We recommend one of the following. JW
Johnson, O. (2006) Collins Tree Guide. HarperCollinsPublishers Ltd. ISBN (pbk) 10-0-
00-720771-9
Johnson, O. and More, D. (2004) Collins Tree Guide. HarperCollinsPublishers Ltd.
ISBN (hbk) 0-00-713954-3
This is a North American textbook, so some of the examples it gives may be unfamiliar –
but it is up-to-date and covers most aspects of forestry.
Grebner, D.L., Bettinger, P. and Siry, J.P. 2013. Introduction to Forestry and Natural
Resources. Academic Press. ISBN (hbk) 978-0-12-386901-2
Forest management and silviculture are introduced in the first year and studied in greater
depth in the second year. The following are worth considering for purchase.
Harmer, R., Kerr, G. and Thompson, R. (2010) Managing Native Broadleaved
Woodland. Forestry Commission. ISBN (pbk) 978-0-11-497344-5
Starr, C. (2005) Woodland Management: A Practical Guide. Ramsbury: Crowood.
ISBN (hbk) 978-1-86126-789-4
Savill, P. (2013) The Silviculture of Trees Used in British Forestry. CABI, Oxon. ISBN
(hbk) 978-1-78064-026-6
General reading can complement the subjects that you study in modules. The books below
are readable and informative, and cover everything from the shape of trees to the forces that
determine global forest cover.

Course Director Prof Julia Jones (JJ) – julia.jones@bangor.ac.uk
Any of the many available text books or popular science books on Conservation or Ecology
would make good reading for new Environmental Conservation or ATME students. I attach a
long list below but do pick and choose any that are easily available to you or particularly
attract your attention. This is by no means an exhaustive list. Any relevant reading you do will
help you. Goldacre (2009) is not a subject specific book but I think it is a fantastic book to
help you get into the way of thinking scientifically/rationally and critically (if you feel you need
some help in this regard). Happy reading! JJ
