                               Examples of green investments in the sector of air

                 1/ In respect of air, these examples demonstrate implementation of the following
                 investment priorities

                 Promoting energy efficiency and clean solutions (domestic heating, clean district heating),
                    non-combustible renewable energy sources, smart energy systems, grids, storage,
                 Set up emission monitoring systems at industrial facilities generating publicly available
                    real time emission data
                 Support smart solutions and planning to reduce air pollution (e.g. establishing Low
                    Emission Zones, sustainable multimodal urban mobility, effective mobility plans, green
                    zones in urban areas),
                 Support cleaner (towards zero emission) public transport and private vehicles, both for
                    the mobility of people and goods,
                 Direct measures to prevent and reduce industrial pollution (air and water) respecting the
                    polluter pays principle, respecting state-aid guidelines, i.e. by implementing measures
                    allowing to go beyond the minimum performance levels of BAT. This includes also testing
                    and deploying emerging and breakthrough technologies,
                 Capacity building actions for improving pollution prevention & control and enforcement,
                    including for industrial accidents,
                 Reducing emissions from agriculture (ammonia and methane) through sustainable
                    farming practices, relevant on-farm and off-farm investments and capacity building

                 The benefits of these projects reside not necessarily in replicating a certain project as such,
                 but applying or using its results at a larger scale. The projects below have been
                 implemented mainly within the LIFE Programme. They are given as examples only, to
                 illustrate benefits beyond environment as such. Further examples can be found in the LIFE
                 database      https://ec.europa.eu/environment/life/project/Projects/index.cfm.                 Many
                 others have been implemented within the EU Cohesion Policy (ERDF and Cohesion Fund)
                 https://ec.europa.eu/regional_policy/en/projects.

                                                                   1

                         A) LIFE Integrated Projects and umbrella projects
                    LIFE CLEAN AIR – This project, which run from 2012 to 2015 aimed at strengthening capacity
                    at national level to contribute to addressing air pollution, but included also tangible
                    mitigation actions such ecodriving, green ports and maritime shipping, retrofitting buses,
                    promoting                           the                       use                        of                       bicycles

                    The I-SharE LIFE project developed from 2018 to 2021 will demonstrate innovative electric
                    car-sharing models to reduce air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions from passenger
                    vehicles in small to mid-sized urban areas in Bergamo, Como, Bollate, Busto Arsizio in Italy
                    and Osijek in Croatia, cities with 35 000 to 120 000 inhabitants. To facilitate market uptake,
                    the project will increase awareness of the opportunities offered by electric car-sharing
                    services among local populations by launching public information campaigns involving digital
                    media and face-to-face events with companies, non-profits and government organisations at
                    regional, national and international level.

                    Benefits
                          Reduce harmful emissions of NOX by about 800 kg a year, CO by 900 kg a year and
                              PM10 by 84 kg a year;
                             Reduce greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to 270 tonnes of CO2 a year;
                          Demonstrate the economic feasibility of e-vehicles and car-sharing services in five
                              small and mid-sized cities;
                          Demonstrate how project results can be replicated across a further 34 sites in Italy
                              and Croatia;
                          Raise public awareness of car-sharing services through a website, newsletters,
                              leaflets and social media channels;
                          Organise live events and technical workshops to broaden the pool of potential
                              passengers.
