WALT: Evaluate what constitutes healthy eating WALT: Evaluate what constitutes healthy eating As you were sorting each food into the various boxes, did you know which food groups contains which food and why we need to eat foods from each group? It is important to remember that different food groups provide the nutrients that humans need to live and grow. The body gets energy from food and oxygen. Calories, which are found in all foods, are units of energy which we need a certain amount of for our bodies to function normally. Not eating enough calories can impact upon our energy levels and physical wellbeing. Conversely, too many calories may result in our bodies become too fat which can in turn lead to obesity. Being overweight can carry risks to our health too by putting strain on our hearts and other organs. The four main food groups are as follow, we need to ensure that our food contains a balance of each of these: Proteins – that help our bodies grow and repair themselves Carbohydrates- that give us energy Vitamins and minerals – that are good for our skin, bones, teeth and blood Fats – that provide energy and help in building our bodies. WALT: Evaluate what constitutes healthy eating A great deal of money is spent by food companies and supermarkets helping people to plan healthy diets. Leaflets and posters are produced, adverts are made and food packaging has a large amount of information. Today you will evaluate how useful this information is. You will also try to explain what is meant by the term ‘recommended daily allowance’. WALT: Evaluate what constitutes healthy eating How does food packaging help you plan a healthy diet? Task 1: Your first task involves looking through How does the food plate help? Are some food groups your kitchen cupboards (and fridge). You will easier to find than others? Which food type have you need to look at the packaging carefully and look eaten most of already today? What food group was that? to see how much :protein, vitamins and What food groups should you eat more or less of? minerals, carbohydrates and fat are present in the ingredients. Once you have done this, you will need to group the food items into lists of which foods contain the most of one of the above. For example, cheese will have a very high fat content but may not contain very much carbohydrate. The point of this is to see which foods have a high proportion of any one particular food group. PLEASE ASK YOUR PARENTS BEFORE YOU GO RAIDING THE FRIDGE….EXPLAIN THAT THIS IS A SCIENCE INVESTIGATION! WALT: Evaluate what constitutes healthy eating On the next slides are the tasks for this lesson. Each task relates to the challenge it represents e.g task 1 =challenge 1 Children completing challenge 3 work should complete each of the tasks. Children completing challenge 2 work should complete tasks 1 and 2. Children completing challenge 1 should complete task 1 (and try the others if you choose to)
