Sheet 1: READ FIRST- Instructions
ORIE MEng Study Plan Instructions
ABOUT: The Study Plan is a tool that allows you to map your path towards satisfying the degree requirements for the ORIE MEng program.

WARNING: The Study Plan form should be filled out using Microsoft Excel only: using other software (e.g. Google Sheets) may result in errors.

REQUIREMENT & DEADLINE: Every ORIE MEng student must file a Study Plan within the first three weeks of each semester. The plan should detail all courses in which you are enrolled, even courses you are not counting towards MEng. Whenever you make changes to your course schedule, be sure to submit an updated Study Plan.

SUBMISSION: Submit an electronic copy of your Study Plan that has been reviewed and approved by your academic advisor to the ORIE MEng Activities site on Canvas.

FILLING OUT THE STUDY PLAN:

(1) Enter your individual information at the top of the Study Plan form, making sure to select the correct MEng Concentration. Leave the signature and date fields blank until you meet with and receive approval from your advisor.

(2) In column A (STEP 1), choose your courses for the indicated academic terms from the dropdown menus. You can also copy and "paste special - values" from the course reference lists in column A below the Study Plan.

(3) In column B (STEP 2), choose the category that each course will count towards (e.g., CORE: Optimization Modeling). See Handbook for details. If you have chosen an invalid category for a course, the text will turn red. If you are not sure, leave the field blank until you meet with your advisor.

Applied OR Concentrators:
There is no category to select in column B for Applied OR concentration credits. Your ORIE-labeled courses that count towards your concentration requirement -- including those you take towards the ORIE Core -- will automatically populate in column D when you make course selections in a green-colored row.

All other Concentrations:
If your concentration allows you to count a course towards the ORIE Core and towards concentration elective credit, then use a green-colored row to select the course for Core credit, and then use a white row to manually type the course name in column A, select the appropriate concentration category in column B, and enter the appropriate number of credit hours in column D, Concentration Elective Credits. Leave the other columns blank for the white row (since the other column counts will be accounted for in the green row).

(4) For courses that are not listed in the dropdown menu (e.g., a course you need to add by petition, or a course that does not count toward the MEng), enter them manually on the white lines provided, along with the associated number of Core, Concentration, ORIE, and MEng credits associated with these courses.

(5) Financial Engineering Students: If "FINANCIAL ENGINEERING" is your selected concentration, you will see an FDS column that will populate based on your course selections. Specifically, courses that can count towards some component of the FDS Certificate will be populated with the course number, to aid tracking. (If you are not pursuing the FDS Certificate, than you can ignore this column.)

(6) STEP 3: The study plan spreadsheet totals, at the bottom, the number of credit hours that your proposed set of courses contributes to each of the requirements. Check to make sure that your selections meet all degree requirements.

(7) STEP 4: As you progress through your degree program, use column M to record the grades you receive in each class. Your cumulative GPA will be displayed at the bottom of column O.

SATISFYING DEGREE REQUIREMENTS
Ultimately, your Study Plan must reflect the coursework you plan to use to satisfy the following degree requirements (see Handbook, p.35):
- Minimum of 30 credit hours of approved Technical coursework (no more than 8 of which can be in Business courses, or 13 for SSO students)
- Minimum of 9 credit hours of approved coursework in ORIE-numbered courses
- Fulfill ORIE Core requirements (see Handbook, pp.7-9); see the Core Requirements checklist to the right
- Fulfill all concentration specific requirements (refer to the section on your concentration from the Handbook)

ADDITIONAL HELP
If you have further questions about how to use this study plan spreadsheet, please contact the Graduate Field Assistant for ORIE, either in person (Rhodes Hall 201) or by email (how3@cornell.edu).
