Sheet 1: READ ME
Northwest supplier HVAC Sales Data (Partial Market Sales)

This spreadsheet summarizes aggregated data provided by regional suppliers plus a partial dataset acquired from HARDI.

4/27/2022

Purpose and Data Summary

The data in this workbook are derived from data submitted by heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) suppliers in the sales data collection effort conducted by the Northwest Energy Efficiency Alliance (NEEA) and their contractor CLEAResult in 2020 for sales occurring in 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, and 2020. The data were supplemented with a partial supplier sales dataset acquired from Heating Air Conditioning and Refrigeration suppliers International (HARDI). The Bonneville Power Administration (BPA) and their contractor Cadeo have analyzed these data to provide the estimates in this workbook. In a separate effort, BPA developed product-flow estimates of regional sales for a subset of these technologies as part of residential HVAC model creation, which will be reported separately. More information about the residential HVAC model is available at https://www.bpa.gov/energy-and-services/efficiency/market-research-and-momentum-savings/hvac-market-research.

The supplier dataset does not represent the total sales in the Northwest; rather, it reflects only the estimated aggregated sales for eleven participating suppliers. The team made three adjustments to the raw sales data to improve overall utility:

1. Applied extrapolation to fill gaps in reported supplier data by applying assumptions about supplier sales in missing time frames.
2. Supplemented sales in Idaho with the HARDI dataset to improve regional representation.
3. Weighted to adjust the sales data to more accurately reflect the regional sales volume using product-flow estimates from BPA’s residential HVAC model.

More information on these adjustments is included in the accompanying HVAC Sales Data Summary Report.

Workbook Structure

Post-Extrapolated Sales Volume Estimated (post-extrapolation) units sold by year and technology. Excludes technologies submitted in small numbers or by fewer than three suppliers. Reflects extrapolated values for 11 suppliers to fill temporal gaps, supplemented with HARDI supplier sales for Idaho. The volumes reported in this tab do not represent market sales.

Residential Heating Efficiency Estimated heating efficiency mix by year and technology for residential gas furnaces, ductless heat pumps, and heat pumps.

Residential Cooling Efficiency Estimated cooling efficiency mix by year and technology for residential heat pumps and central air conditioners.

Sheet 2: Post-Extrapolated Sales Volume
Post-Extrapolated Sales Volume

These values are not representative of total market sales volume.

These values are based on supplier-reported sales data (including HARDI-reported sales for Idaho) and include extrapolated quantities to address temporal gaps in supplier-reported sales volume, e.g., missing months or years.

Use this tab to: Review the total volumes of reported sales by technology and by year. Assess year-over-year change in sales volumes within a given technology. Assess growth trends for residential gas furnaces, ductless heat pumps, heat pumps, and central air conditioners.
