Research visit to ASCoR for PhD candidates
If you are a PhD candidate at another university, in the Netherlands or abroad, please consider
applying for a research visit to ASCoR. We welcome several visiting PhD candidates each year. This
document outlines the application procedure, other useful information about PhD research visits to
ASCoR, and the application form.
Application procedure
There is no application deadline, but applications for a PhD research visit should be made at least 3
months before the intended start of your stay through the application form on page 2. Before
submitting your application, you should identify and contact a suitable ASCoR researcher willing to
act as tutor during your stay. You can find the ASCoR staff on the website under program groups.
Please do not send e-mails to random ASCoR members, but rather choose one or two that fit your PhD
project. If you need help choosing a tutor, you are welcome to contact us through ascor-secr-
fmg@uva.nl.
Please use the form on the following pages and send it to the ASCoR Research Manager through
ascor-secr-fmg@uva.nl , stating ‘Request for PhD research visit’ in the subject line.
Your request will be reviewed by the ASCoR Board. Please also check our website for information
about ASCoR: http://www.ascor.uva.nl
General information
Duration
PhD research visits at ASCoR preferably last at least 3 months and can last up to one year. The typical
duration is 4-6 months. It is easier to find accommodation if your stay coincides with a semester
(September-January or February-August).
Facilities and support
We provide visiting PhD candidates with flexible office space, general IT facilities, and library access.
All visiting PhD candidates are assigned a senior researcher as a tutor during their visit. If your stay
lasts more than one month, you are very welcome to join one of our PhD Clubs, which convene every
other week. Of course, you are also very welcome to participate in other ASCoR activities such as
guest lectures throughout your stay.
Taking PhD courses during your stay
Access to PhD courses is available through the Graduate School of Communication at a discounted fee
subject to admission by the Graduate School director. Admission is only granted if the course is not yet
fully booked, if your background knowledge as shown in your CV is deemed sufficient for the course,
and if you participate actively in the course (i.e., not as auditor).
Costs
Please be aware that we need to charge our long-stay guests (> 1 month) a service fee of €700 per year
for administration and facilities. In exceptional cases, it is possible to receive a waiver of the service
fee.
ASCoR does not provide scholarships for PhD research visits.

Accommodation during your visit
The ASCoR secretariat can help you find accommodation through UvA Housing. You can only rent
through UvA Housing for an entire semester (September-January or February-August), we cannot
guarantee that UvA Housing will have suitable accommodation available, and we cannot waive your
service fee if you rent through UvA Housing.
See also UvA Housing and ‘How to find a room on the private market’.
Visa and permits
For PhD students needing a residence permit and/or visa, the UvA offers immigration services for
student residency. If you need a visa or permit please contact the ASCoR secretariat after you have
received your acceptance letter from ASCoR. To obtain a work permit, you need proof of an income
amounting to at least €1,850 per month throughout your stay.
