Atomic Structure/Periodic Table Unit Project: This project is intended as a summative assessment to show your learning in the Atomic Structure & Periodic Table Unit. Menu 1 - Choices for Project Approved Research Project in the area of Atomic Structure or the Periodic Table (A) Atomic Structure & Periodic Table Review Game (A) Imaginary Periodic Table Activity (B) Menu 2 – Choices for Project Atomic Structure & Periodic Table Review Game (A) Imaginary Periodic Table Activity (B) Periodic Table Family Presentation (C) Periodic Table Family Presentation - individual project Project Description (assigned at end of unit) You will be assigned 3 families from the periodic table: 1 metal, 1 non-metal and 1 metalloid family. Your assignment is to put together a presentation (2-4 minutes) for the class about this family. In your presentation you will need to include the following: Name of the family Position in the periodic table Valence Electrons How many How does it complete its valence shell (octet) in a reaction Chemical activity (stability, reactivity with other elements, etc.) Exceptions (elements that are in the position but aren’t part of the family and/or elements that are part of the family but not in the described position) Common chemical properties of the elements in each family Common physical properties of the elements in each family Picture or samples of elements in each family Examples of uses of elements in each family or compounds it forms including, if possible, examples to pass around the class. Scoring Your presentation will be graded on: Content (70%) o Accuracy of the content o Completion of the above requirements Professionalism (30%) o Appearance of presentation o Delivery of presentation Imaginary Periodic Table Activity (possible team activity – maximum of 2 members/team) Project Description (assigned at end of unit) Your team will be given a list of “new” elements discovered on a far away planet with at most only a couple of properties provided. From these properties you will create a Periodic Table for these elements that will group the elements into families of similar properties and allow you to place as yet unclassified elements or as yet undiscovered elements. You will be acting as a young Dimitri Mendeleev. Scoring Your project is scored by the completion of your Imaginary Periodic Table and a Report about your table. The following are the scoring parameters: Table (50%) o Properly Labeling o Consistent Property Arrangement o Unclassified Element Placement o Undiscovered Elements Placement Report (50%) o Correctly Answering Questions Provided o Explanation of Arrangement of the Elements with Properties & masses o Description & Explanation of Unclassified Element Placement o Explanation & Properties of Missing Elements Atomic Structure & Periodic Table Game (possible team activity – maximum of 2 members/team) Project Description: (assigned at beginning of unit) Your challenge in this unit is to develop a game related to Mendeleev’s Periodic Table of the Elements. How the game is played, whether on a table, with cards, on a computer, or with equipment that only you might choose is up to you. You might even choose to emphasize some aspects of the periodic table over others, or to focus on some types of information presented by the table rather than others. However, you need to keep in mind the rubric that is given to you by your teacher. Scoring: How will your game be graded? What qualities should a good game have? A rubric will be used to grade your game according to the following factors: Incorporating a variety of chemistry concepts related to the periodic table Correctly and sufficiently addressing the concepts Providing clear and concise explanations for the concepts presented Integrating the concepts into the game in a creative way Appropriateness for high school Allowing players to practice learned concepts Creating rules that are straightforward and making the game easy to play Making the game interesting and entertaining!! Research Project (possible team activity – maximum of 2 members/team) This is for those students who are significantly advanced in the area of atomic structure and periodic table organization. Project Description (assigned at beginning of unit) 1. Your Project will come in two phases: a. The Report is submitted to the teacher with estimated class time required to teach the students due at least 3 days before you will teach b. Presentation to the class (teaching the class what you learned) 2. You may use any appropriate method of reporting or presenting to communicate your learning and to help the students understand your topic (video, prezi, ppt, etc.) 3. Your report will provide test questions from your report (given to me) and you will provide a classroom version for the students to practice 4. You may have to work in a team depending on the number of students qualifying for this option and the number of topics available. 5. Your report must contain a list of resources you used to put your report together (books, periodicals, websites used for information, photos, videos, etc. must all be referenced) Scoring Your Project will be scored in the following manner: Report (80%) o Accuracy of the content o Completion of the above requirements Presentation (20%) o Appearance of presentation o Delivery of presentation Topics to choose from (no repeats in a class period) Electron Configuration – how are electrons arranged in the electron cloud model instead of the Bohr model Electron Cloud – explaining how the electron cloud appears using energy levels, sublevels and orbitals including shapes, electron capacities, and knowledge of how this process occurred. How a particular color of light emission is linked to electron movement between specific energy levels Nuclear Sub-Subatomic Particles – what does our current theory suggest about the structure of protons and neutrons beginning with quarks and beyond.
