Course Number, Title, and Description
MAC 2233 – Elementary Calculus – 3 credits
This course is offered by the Department of Mathematics in the College of Arts and Sciences.
This 3 - credit course will cover Introduction to the techniques of calculus of primary use to
business students. Topics include: differentiation and integration of algebraic functions with
applications, exponential and logarithmic functions with applications to finance and economics.
*This course is NOT equivalent to MAC 2311.
“This is a general education course in mathematics that meets the College-Level Mathematics
Skills requirement.”
Textbook: Calculus with Applications, 12th edition, Lial, Greenwell, Ritchey, Pearson
Note: You don’t need to purchase a physical textbook since you’ll always have access to the e-
text in MyMathLab.
Prerequisite(s)
MAC 1105 for level Undergraduate with minimum grade of C or ( Accuplacer Coll. Math Subscore
066 or Mobius Alg&Pre-Calc Readi Test 18 ) or ACT Math 24 or SAT Math Score 550 or MATH

Required Materials and Calculator
• 18-week Standalone access code for My Math Lab (MML) - Calculus with Applications, 12e, Lial,
Greenwell,, ISBN: 13 - 9780137342495 - eBook is included.
There are three options for gaining access to MML:
o Option 1: Purchase an access code from the FGCU bookstore. Then go to the course
Canvas page (https://www.fgcu.edu/canvas/ ), then click on MyLab and Mastering. Click any
link on the page. Follow the directions to register and input your access code.
o Option 2 (Recommended): Go to the course Canvas page (https://www.fgcu.edu/canvas/ ),
then click on MyLab and Mastering MyLab and Mastering. Click any link on the page. Follow
the directions to register and purchase an access code.
o Option 3: If you cannot purchase an access code within the first week of class, go to the
course Canvas page (https://www.fgcu.edu/canvas/ ), then click on MyLab and Mastering.
Click any link on the page. Follow the directions to register and select the option for a
temporary access code.
o YOU DO NOT NEED A COURSE ID. If you are asked to input one, you are on the wrong
website
o If you purchase the access code from the bookstore, DO NOT follow the attached instructions
to the access code.
o DO NOT USE A TRIAL CODE you find online. These expire in three weeks, and you will lose
those grades. Mymathlab.com gives you the option to use temporary access for 17 days and
sends you an email to pay within those 17 days. If you use this feature, you must be sure you
do not make a new account.
o The instructor WILL NOT transfer grades to your new grade book spot if you happen to do so.
If, for any reason, you happen to make two accounts, your final grade in the class will be
based on the account with the most homework done in it. Grades will not transfer from one
account to the other.
o If you experience errors, use the newest version of Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox.
o IE and Safari do not work as well with mymathlab.com. For technical support, call 1-888-883-
1299 or go to http://247xl.custhelp.com/ to start a live chat at any time.
• A scientific calculator.
• You will also be required to print the lecture notes for each chapter and keep them organized in a
binder/folder. These notes are posted on Canvas Modules.
• Webcams are required in the event that this class moves online due to Covid-19.
Grading System
Please note that some assignments will be done on Canvas, while others will be done on MML.

Your final grade in the class will be determined as follows:
• Exams 40% (lowest 1 dropped)
• Final Exam ………20% (cannot be dropped)
• Lecture Activities 20% (lowest 2 dropped)
• MyLab Homework 20% (lowest 4 dropped)
Scoring Ranges for Letter Grades:

NOTE: Final grades will be calculated to the tenths place. Those ending with 0.5 or higher will be
rounded up to the next whole number; all else will be rounded down. Students wishing to appeal
final grades must follow the FGCU policy for grade appeals found in the FGCU Student Guidebook
at http://studentservices.fgcu.edu/StudentConduct/appeals.html
Exams
• You must bring a valid photo ID to all tests. If you miss a test due to an excused absence, you
must email your instructor valid documentation within 2 days of the absence. If you have a
documented excused absence, you will use the one dropped test score first. If you miss two
tests and have valid documentation for both of them, you will be allowed to make up the
second test. Approved make-ups must be taken within one week of the original test.
Vacations, travel, and illness without a doctor’s note are not excused.
• Events such as jury duty and student athlete games must be approved well before the date of
the exam to be missed and the exam should be taken before the absence.
• Students registered with adaptive services must have your instructor fill out a test form at
least one week prior to the test date.
• Any suspicious activities or dishonesty evidence caught while taking the exam may result in a
zero grade and/or send the case to the Students Affairs.
Final Exam
• Final exam is a cumulative exam. It will be taken on the main FGCU campus in a proctored
environment on the date and time mentioned on Gulfline. Any suspicious activities or
dishonesty evidence caught while taking the exam may result in (F) grade and/or send the
case to the Students Affairs.
Homework and Chapter Quizzes
• Homework and Chapter quizzes assignments will be completed on MyMathLab. However,
these assignments’ grades will still be shown in your grad book on Canvas. For these grades
to be synced to Canvas, you MUST pair your MyMathLab account with your Canvas account.
This can be done by creating and accessing the MyMathLab account from Canvas, at least for

the first time. For more details, please check the “Getting Started” section under “Modules” on
Canvas.
• Note: if you already have an account with Pearson (MyMathLab) from the previous course, you
may just access this account from Canvas using the same steps listed in “Getting Started”.
Then you will be allowed to purchase the 18-week Standalone access code mentioned above.
• The deadlines of all Homework and Chapter quizzes assignments’ can be viewed on
MyMathLab.
• The homework has an initial due date, but you can still submit it until the last day of classes.
Problems submitted after the initial deadline will suffer a 50% penalty deduction.
To account for technical and other issues, your four lowest homework scores will be dropped.
• There will be an online quiz at the end of each chapter. They are assigned and completed
through MyMathLab. The total number of quizzes is 9. There will be no makeup quizzes given.
Your lowest two quizzes score will be dropped. Any quiz assignment submitted after the due
date will suffer 10% deduction per day
Lecture Activities
Lecture Activities may include, but are not necessarily limited to, worksheets, group activities,
and group projects. You will keep an organized, legible notebook for this course. Your graded
lecture activities may include notebook evaluations. You are required to bring your notebook to
EVERY lecture meeting. Lecture activities are considered a proof of attendance. Hence, there will
be no make-up lecture activities given regardless the reason of absence.
Optional Practice Exams
These practice exams are meant to be a study guide for the actual exams. They are posted on
MyMathLab and are not graded. However, you are expected to do the practice exams before
taking the scheduled exams.
Extra Credit
Please check out the Extra Credit assignments under Assignments on Canvas. Additionally, One
exam score, two quizzes scores two lecture activities scores, and four missing homework scores
will be dropped. Please do not ask your instructor if there is something else you can do to
boost your grade beyond completing the required course assignments.
Testing Rules and Regulations
• A scientific calculator of your choice may be used. No graphing calculators are allowed.
• Cellphones must be turned off and out of sight during all tests. If your cell phone is on your
lap, you will get a zero.
• The university policies regarding academic honesty can be found in the “Student Code of
Conduct” and the “Policies and Procedures” sections of the Student Guidebook. All students
are expected to study this document, which outlines their responsibilities and consequences
for violations of the policy.
