Project criteria
Essential How does your site meet these criteria?
Need a site in an urban or semi-urban area (for
example town, village setting).
2
Need a site of approximately 260m (the size of a
tennis court) for the actual Miyawaki Forest. This
area can be of any shape or orientation, with paths
through it, but the forest must not be narrower
than 4m across at any point.

Need a site that is accessible for large machinery -
digger needed for soil preparation, truck delivery
of fencing, trees, soil improvers and mulch.
No underground infrastructure - soil will be
excavated to 1m depth. Need to ensure that no
water pipes or gas mains etc. are near to the
planting area.
No overhead infrastructure - trees will grow to
20m or more. Needs to be away from overhead
power cables, phone lines or large trees (however,
trees on the edge of the site can be incorporated
into the design.
Permission of the landowner to plant the forest at
the site. No future site development plans and
agreement signed with NNDC.
Site must be planted by end of December 2023.

Project criteria
Desirable How does your site meet these criteria?
Possible water access point - trees may need
watering during first 2 years of growth, so a water
access point needs to be located nearby or access
for a vehicle and water bowser to get to the site.
Need a site that is not causing obstruction to
people’s right of way (the forest becomes very
dense and impassable unless a specific pathway is
incorporated into the design).
Site should not be designated as sensitive in any
way (for example SSSI, SAC, Ramsar).
Site should be an open area (we do not want trees
to be removed to plant new ones!). Some scrub or
low vegetation is fine, as are trees on the edge of
the proposed site.
Site accessible or enjoyable by the public or a
specific community group or organisation.
