                           Registered Charity No. 282493
Welcome to the Medina Mariners Association winter newsletter
                        2016.
We would like to send Christmas greetings to all MMA members, with hopes for a great
                        boating year in 2017.
More than 40 members enjoyed the MMA laying up supper at The Breeze, Island
Harbour, at the end of October and we hope to arrange more get-togethers next year.

                        Adrian Wilkins
MMA suffered a sad loss in November with the death of hard-working committee
member Adrian Wilkins. A former commodore of East Cowes Sailing Club, Adrian
represented the MMA on both the Cowes Harbour and Newport Harbour users’
advisory groups and his experience, common sense and hard work will be much
                        missed.

Adrian’s role on the Cowes and Newport harbour users’ groups will be taken by MMA
committee member Peter Jackson. A former Cowes harbour commissioner, Peter is an
experienced sailor and has good knowledge of the Medina. MMA chairman Ray Redrup
continues until April as the other MMA rep in Cowes and Newport.

No increase in MMA subs and dinghy park fees for 2017
Renewal notices will soon be going out for MMA subs
and dinghy park spaces for 2017.
Good news is there will be no increase for 2017.
Subs remain at £13 p.a. and £32 for a dinghy space.

It would be a big help to MMA membership officer Colin
Caldicott and his helpers if you could also send in a
photo of your boat in the dinghy park, clearly labelled
with its dinghy park space number, ie A34, B13 etc. This
will help us identify that the correct boats are in their
allocated spaces. Send with your membership renewal or mail
membership@medinamariners.org (clearly marked with your name and dinghy plot
                        number)

                                                                                                                     A survey undertaken by committee

      What’s happening on the river
MMA chairman Ray Redrup reports that IW Council plans for the Newport
Harbour end of the river are going ahead, with old moorings and private
pontoons being replaced by long pontoons, similar to the Cowes Harbour
moorings. Good news is the Council will remove the old pontoons and does
not intend to charge berth holders for this.

A recent meeting of the Cowes Harbour advisory committee was told
dredging of the eastern (small ships) channel has been postponed until winter
2017/18, because of “unresolved issues” between the government’s Home
and Communities Agency (HCA) and new marine developer Camper and
      Nicholson.
Red Funnel has given a commitment to provide a new slipway at East Cowes
slipway (opposite the café) before the slipway at Red Funnel yard is removed
      as part of development plans.
Work/discussion over the water taxi service for 2017 is continuing.
(Our thanks to MMA committee member Peter Jackson for providing this
      information.)

      River water quality
There is concern at continuing pollution of the Medina river. Peter Jackson
has spoken to Estuaries Officer Sue Hawley, who asks any MMA members
noticing pollution to report it to Environment Agency hotline, on 0800 807060.
You could also send photos to Alex Minns at the IW Council (Newport
harbour) email alex.minns@iow.gov or chc@cowes.co.uk (Cowes Harbour) if
      you spot pollution.

      Medina Mariners AGM 2017
A provisional date has been set for the 2017 AGM.
We are planning to hold this on Wednesday, May 10, at the East Cowes
Sailing Club, which was a popular venue this year.
You will receive official notice of meeting and more information about this
      closer to the date.
