INSTRUCTIONS ON WHAT YOU NEED WHEN PURCHASING A BOAT/MOTOR/TRAILER OUT OF STATE 1. 2 notarized Bill of Sales---1 is used for the trailer and 1 is used for the boat & motor, but it needs to list all on each Bill of Sale. 2. Must break down the sale price for boat, motor, and trailer. DMV will only tax on the price of the trailer. Do not put total price on each title. Put only the price for that item, boat & motor or trailer on the title. 3. Seller MUST sign their name EXACTLY as it is printed on the titles. (John S. Doe---needs to be signed John S. Doe). If the seller signs it wrong and DMV can’t read it, it will be rejected. a. IF SELLER DOES SIGN THEIR NAME WRONG, THEN YOU MUST GET AN AFFIDAVIT OF CORRECTION BEFORE YOU LEAVE THE NOTARY. 4. Some states do not require notary signature on Bill of Sale, so call us and tell us what state you are in and we can tell you if you will need the Bill of Sale notarized or not. 5. Copy of the seller’s license (front & back) to prove residency. a. It can be a picture of the front and back of their license, because we can print it out once you come into our office. 6. The boat registration and title (if any-some states don’t title boats) in seller’s name--- this cannot be a double transfer from another person to him. Seller’s name must be printed on the titles and registrations. MUST have at least the last registration in the seller’s name showing they paid taxes in that state, otherwise Dept of Revenue will not accept it. If they don’t have that, then they MUST get it before you buy it. 7. Most recent registration and title for the boat trailer in the seller’s name. ***Just because the seller says that his state doesn’t need that doesn’t mean that Louisiana won’t, so it’s always a good idea to check with us about it before you leave him. I would rather a phone call than a mistake we can’t fix when you get back here. These are not my rules, they are state rules & will not bend.
