Wikipedia list article This is a list of abbreviations used in medical prescriptions, including hospital orders (the patient-targeted part of which is called sig codes). This list does not include abbreviations for pharmaceuticals or suffixes in the name of the drug, such as CD, CR, ER, XT (see time-issuing technology § List of
abbreviations for those). Capitalization and use of periods are a matter of style. In the list, abbreviations in English are capitalized until those in Latin are not. These abbreviations can be verified in the reference works, both the latter [1] and older. [2] [3] [4] Some of these works (such as Wyeth 1901[4]) are so
comprehensive that all their content cannot be reproduced here. This list includes all that are often found in today's health care in English-speaking regions. Some of these are obsolete; others remain relevant. The redundancies, which were rejected by the Joint Committee, are marked in red. These cuts, which have
been rejected by other organizations, such as the Institute for Safe Medicines Practices (ISMP) and the American Medical Association (AMA), are marked in orange. The Joint Commission is an independent, nonprofit that offers accreditation to hospitals and other health organizations in the United States. Although their
recommendations are not mandatory for U.S. doctors, they are required by organizations that request accreditation from the Joint Commission.
