I. COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This course, along with Pharmacy 180 will present the major drus and drug classes
used in health care. Pertinent anatomy,physiology, pathology , pharmacology, and
terminology will be discussed. A major goal oth these courses is to familiarize the
student with common classificationss, common names, (generic/trade/brand,
manufacturers), common uses and general knowledge of approximately 500 most
prescribed medications (Pharmacy 180 and 181)
This common classifications emphasized in this course will mainly include that of
the Compendium of Pharmaceutical Specialities (C.P.S.) and the system of the
American Society of Health System Pharmacists,American Hospital Formulary
Service (AHFS).

II. COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES:
Upon completion of this course, the student shall be expected to demonstrate
(identify, define, explain, illustrate, and apply) knowledge & understanding of:
1. The major drug classifications used in health care.
2. The common drugs names (generic, trade (brand), and manufacturers) used in
health care. A main focus will include approximately 500 of the most used
prescription drugs (Pharmacy 180 & 181).
The software program “PharmaQuiz” will be provided as a tool to help with this
objective.
Also, “Canadian Drug Speak” software programs can be ordered online at
www.candiandrugspeak.com
3. The common uses of these drugs in health care.
4. General knowledge and understanding of the principles and terminology (i.e.
pertinent anatomy, physiology, pathology, and pharmacology) of pharmaceutical
products necessary to assume a position among health professionals.
5. Self-direct learning skills.
6. Learning new knowledge and skills.
Notes:
It is intended that the student also take Pharmacy 180 (Pharmacology I).
These courses will provide a working knowledge of drug information necessary to
assumed a position among health professionals and provide the pharmacy technician
the background knowledge necessary to understand drugs and drug therapy at a
pharmacy technician level. (See NAPRA Pharmacy Technician competencies). It is
NOT intended for the pharmacy technician to counsel on medications. This is the
legal responsibility of a pharmacist. Refer these questions to your pharmacist. It is
important for pharmacy technicians to develop the skill of “screening”. Questions
outside the pharmacy technician’s scope of practise must be referred to a
pharmacist.
