Original Article The Use of IDNT (International Dietetics and Nutrition Terminology), Nutrition Diagnosis, and Intervention in the Diabetes Outpatient Service Chun-Chun Liu, Nien-Tung Yu, Yi-Ting Huang, Yu-Ping Lin, Yi-Ping Chen Department of Nutrition, Pingtung Christian Hospital Abstract This project aims to study the use of IDNT ( International Dietetics and Nutrition Terminology) by applying the standardized language of nutrition diagnosis and nutrition intervention in the Diabetes Outpatient Service. The subjects of this study were from a branch of the Taiwanese Diabetes Shared Care Network located at a regional teaching hospital in the south of Taiwan. Patients with diabetes ( n=1352 ) were recruited for this study. These patients have been followed-up at the Diabetes Outpatient Service for at least one year, and their medication regimen have not been altered during the study period. Results statistically showed that “excessive carbohydrate intake” ( 38.3% ), “inadequate fiber intake” (15.1%), and “overweight/obesity” ( 13.6% ) were the most factors in use as nutritional diagnosis. For nutrition intervention, the dieticians often applied modification of macronutrient distribution, type or amount of foods and nutrients within meals or at specified time” (33.3%) or suggested“general/healthful diet” (24%) to subjects. Using the standardized language when providing nutrition care for patients with diabetes can improve communications between dietitians, reduce misunderstanding, and ultimately raise patients’ satisfaction. In addition, it can be used to improve communications between healthcare workers, to assist in planning the structure of electronic medical records in the near future, and also to help research in the nutrition fields. We urge the Taiwan Dietitian Association to purchase the reprint permission of Nutrition Care Process and Model (NCP&M), and at the same time, to arrange a series of continuing education and training sessions. In this way, not only could we do more for the patients with diabetes, but also provide a wholesome and better healthcare system in Taiwan.
