and is a great addition to any nutrition class or as a reference to practitioners. -Amy Hesh-Fischl, MS, RD, LDN, BC-ADM, CDE (University of Chicago Medical Center) Dudi Score: 5 stars from Publisher Reviewer: Amy Hesse Fischl, MS RDN LDN BC-ADM CDE (University of Chicago Medical Center) Description: This update of Williams Basics Nutrition and Diet Therapy continues the high level of quality
we expected from this book. It maintains a personal approach to learning, focusing on making it easy for readers to learn and understand information. Since the 10th edition was published in 2011, there has been a plethora of new nutritional information needed for this new edition. Purpose: The goal is to teach the basic concepts of nutrition. Audience: The main audience is students, but the book can be
used by practitioners as a good resource for basic nutrition information. Features: The book is divided into three parts: Introduction to human nutrition; Community nutrition and life cycle; and introduction to clinical nutrition. The book is accompanied by the Evolve website, an additional resource for students to get more educational materials (including additional applications as PDF files that are not included
in the book, case studies with questions, flash cards and additional research questions). Chapters include outlines of topics, issues to consider, references and key terms, as well as several colorful tables, case studies, perspectives on the practice feature that highlights the topic, interesting, and the Focus on Culture section. In the chapter on diabetes there are some excellent tables highlighting the criteria
for diagnosis, metabolic goals, diet and drug interaction, medications used to treat diabetes, and the equivalents of 15 grams of carbohydrates. Another table includes a guide to for an active person with type 1 diabetes. Perspectives in practice This chapter focuses on travel and diabetes, which is important for students and practitioners to understand and be prepared to solve problems. I found it strange
that it focused on exchanges rather than grams of carbohydrates. My patient population is only type 1 diabetic patients, and exchanges are rarely, if ever, used. I would not recommend using this table because it is not typical of what is used in practice. Assessment: This is an update to the standard for teaching nutrition to students and is a great addition to any nutrition class and as a benchmark for
practitioners. Doody Review You read free preview pages from 16 to 22 are not displayed in this preview. You read free preview pages from 26 to 35 do not appear in this preview.
