                   COURSE DESCRIPTION 
                   This course covers the fundamental principles of nutrition including an overview of basic 
                   nutrients, the importance of proper nutrition to maintaining optimal health, the role nutrition 
                   plays in disease prevention, the detrimental effects of obesity and inactivity, and food safety.  
                   GRADING 
                   Five exams will be given in the lecture section of this course.  No make-up exams will be 
                   given.    The exam average will account for 50% of the total course grade.  Additional 
                   assignments and projects will account for the remaining 50% of the grade.  Students will also be 
                   required to maintain a food journal. 
                    
                   SUPPLEMENTAL RESOURCES 
                   We will utilize the class WebCT/BB site for many assignments.  Discussions on the WebCT/BB 
                   are mandatory, with participation required.   
                   Slides, articles, group projects will be available online for you to download at your convenience.

                  Miscellaneous:  
                      1.   All electronic devices must be turned off during lecture. This includes cell 
                           phones, pagers, handheld palm devices and any other potentially distracting 
                           devices. Cell phones must be turned off and inaccessible during exams. 
                            
                      2.   Class will start promptly according to the clock in the classroom. The door will be 
                           shut and locked at the start of class at the end of the first week of classes. 
                           Students arriving late will not be allowed in the classroom and will be counted 
                           absent. 
                            
                      3.   I encourage students to utilize the internet site for this textbook 
                           “CONNECT” there are many study hints and self evaluation tests available at this 
                           site. Refer to your text for more information.   
                   
                      4.  Absences: You will automatically be dropped from the class roster according to 
                           the absence policy found in Coastal Bend College’s Student Handbook. It is the 
                           student’s responsibility to obtain information missed during the absence period.  
                            
                      5.  Exams and Pop Quizzes cannot be made up.  If you miss a test, then you must 
                           contact me regarding the situation. If at all possible call me prior to missing the 
                           exam for possible alternatives. 
                       
                      6.   If you are going to be absent for class or lab, it is your responsibility to contact 
                           me BEFORE class if you wish to request an excused absence. No extra credit 
                           work will be allowed for this course. 
                       
                      7.  Plagiarism and/or cheating in class will result in automatic failure. 
                       
                      8.  Students with special needs or disabilities, as outlined in the student handbook, 
                           may request assistance from the counseling center or the instructor. CBC strives 
                           to accommodate special needs for its students.
