Western Australia Eating Disorders Outreach and Consultation Service (WAEDOCS)
Family Based Treatment for Eating Disorders (FBT)
Workshop for Psychologists and other Mental Health Practitioners
plus 10 monthly sessions of consultation via telehealth
With imminent changes in the Medicare Benefits Scheme (MBS) regarding increased
provision of treatment for people with eating disorders, this workshop is aimed at
mental health professionals planning to provide treatment for adolescents with anorexia
nervosa. Funding has been provided by the Mental Health Commission and North
Metropolitan Health Service to make this available at reduced cost.
Family Based Therapy (FBT) was developed at the Maudsley Hospital (London) and popularised
by further research in the USA and publication of a treatment manual in the early 2000s. The
model integrates ideas from several family therapy approaches but has the basic premise that
families are the best resource to help their child recover from Anorexia Nervosa (AN) at home. It
is an outpatient treatment that supports the family over 12-months, and is suitable for adolescents
with AN with a short course of illness. FBT has the strongest evidence base to date for this age
group and was first implemented in Australia at The Children’s Hospital at Westmead in 2003.
This workshop will provide intensive practical training in the application of this model including:
 Theoretical background and framework, including the roles of the multidisciplinary team
 Detailed descriptions of each phase and the key sessions at the start of treatment
 The demonstration of key skills and the first two sessions of treatment
 Guided role play will be used to aid micro skill development of participants
By the completion of the workshop participants will have a good working knowledge of the model
and will be able to begin to use FBT in their own clinical setting.
Date & Time: Friday November 1 and Saturday November 2 9.00-4.30
Location: Trinity on Hampden, 230 Hampden Road, Crawley, WA 6009
Cost: $200.00 + GST or free to NMHS Staff
Presenters: Andrew Wallis and Bronwyn Raykos
Dr Andrew Wallis is a clinical social worker and family therapist. He has worked with adolescents and
families for more than 20 years. In 2003 with colleagues at The Children’s Hospital, Westmead,
he established the first FBT program in Australia, and in 2014, Multiple Family Therapy for Anorexia
Nervosa. He has been providing training, consultation and supervision in Australia and New Zealand
for more than 10 years, helping to support public and private services. Andrew has been involved in
family therapy research with more than 25 per reviewed papers and book chapters including his PhD
research on the impact of FBT on family relationships. His current role is Co-lead of the Sydney
Children’s Hospital Eating Disorder Service and Deputy Head of Department of Adolescent Medicine.
Dr Bronwyn Raykos is a Senior Clinical Psychologist and heads up the Eating Disorders Program
at The Centre for Clinical Interventions (CCI). She is passionate about providing and evaluating
evidence-based treatment for eating disorders, including FBT and cognitive behavioural therapy
(CBT). Bronwyn and her colleagues recently introduced the Urgent FBT pathway at CCI, to increase
urgent access for 16-18 year olds with Anorexia Nervosa and their families. She has worked with
adolescents and their families for over 15 years, including a post at the Institute of Psychiatry in
London. Her research has been published in peer-reviewed journals and book chapters and
presented at national and international conferences.
This training will be particularly useful for private practice clinicians in light of the new dedicated
Medicare Benefits Scheme item number for eating disorder treatment commencing November 2019.
