COMMUNITY-ENGAGED LEARNING MEDICAL SPANISH PATHWAY: GLOBAL HEALTH EQUITY Project Description FACILITATORS Achieve medical Spanish fluency through oncampus and online language Alexandra Leader, MD, MPH learning programs Lydia Cleveland, MPH Work in clinics and within the community in pursuit of health equity for PARTNERS marginalized populations Local & International NGOs, Annual Student Activities Non-Profits Religious Organizations 36 students have successfully completed bilingual physician curriculum Schools and Universities and certification Local Health Systems Opportunities for international clinical service and language immersion training THE NEED Health fairs, conversation groups, home dinners, and cultural activities Individuals of Hispanic origin are the fastest growing population in Community Outcomes/Results Hampton Roads (26.2% growth in Regular community health screenings and education on diabetes, VA since 2010) hypertension, nutrition, and elevated cholesterol Individuals of Hispanic origin are Over 800 people screened last year often medically underserved due to language barriers between patient Increased healthcare worker capacity to overcome language and cultural and provider, and many other social barriers to care determinants of health Sustained medical home for the uninsured immigrant community of Hampton Roads in bilingual, student-run free Clinica Esperanza, currently CERTIFICATION OR serving over 200 patients QUALIFICATION Bilingual physician certificate
