Medical Spanish Program Student led Medical Spanish courses are an opportunity for medical students to begin or continue developing their Spanish conversation skills with a strong emphasis on medical vocabulary and the patient encounter. Classes meet for an hour once a week during the academic year and are led by other medical students. Who teaches these classes? Medical students with advanced speaking skills peer-teach the courses in teams of two or three. Interviews for students interested in teaching positions are conducted in Spanish at the beginning of the academic year. Students who teach in the program are eligible to receive two weeks of elective teaching credit on their medical school transcript! Who participates? Any medical student at Stritch is welcome to participate in the program, from native Spanish speakers to students with no foreign language background. The courses are designed to meet students at their current language skill level, whether fluent or brand-new to Spanish! On average, about 120 first and second year medical students participate in the program each year. Four levels of classes are offered: Other program features include: Level 1: Beginner • Standardized Patient exercises in Spanish Level 2: Intermediate • Cultural competency training Level 3: Advanced-Conversation • Shadowing opportunities in medical interpreting Level 4: Advanced-Medical Terminology • Teaching elective credit for student teachers • Preceptorship with physicians practicing within Spanish speaking areas of Chicago
