Kevin TranProfessor Natalie KubasekEnglish 12019 February 2015 "Madre Tongue" Rector Analysis There has always been the assimilation and change necessary in any country when he came to accept foreigners to already possessed lands. However, it became harmful to those people
as they felt uncomfortable and unwelcome. In Amy Tan’s “Madre Tongue” Tan, Tan makes a valid point on cultural racism by expressing his vision on racism, his experience and how he managed it. After reading, it makes readers realize how it feels to be foreigners in a country. The story
tells the struggles Tan and her mother faced to live a normal life. Tan provides real life situations from his personal experience; making it easy for readers to understand the struggles immigrants face in America. Foy states that from 1997 to 2011, “were more than 11,800 complaints
submitted with the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.” This statistics shows that people who have “broken” English have struggled with just being able to work normally and quite just like Tan’s mother. Foreigners who have yet learned the main language of a country are
treated badly and consequently becomeof what will happen to them. Discrimination is not only seen from the language, but also the way people appear. The main goal of “Mother Tongue” is discrimination Tan and his mother have faced life in America. Using ethos that is defined as a
person's credibility, Tan explains its credibility as a writer in the first paragraphs. Tan also uses the ethos explaining why people treated her and her mother with discrimination. While she grew up, Tan's mother was sought to not be able to speak the right English, saying that “... my mother
quarrelled with people because they did not understand her English, because she was Chinese” (Amy Tan Interview – Academy of Achievement). Tan uses rhetorical strategies to create a topic on how it was affected by discrimination and criticizes standards in culture. She gives many
examples on how people treat others and how they express differently when they are with some individuals. There are more public Tan is trying to reach. The first being the people who take advantage of those speak English “broken” as Tan’s mother. To tell these people how it feels not to
know a language and to understand what it feels like to deal with these problems every day. Another targeted audience could be intended for immigrants struggling with language and social interactions. A final audience possiblelanguage barriers between families that develop when learning
more languages. I think the intended audience is the way people take advantage of others based on their language. Tan interacted with important people instead of her mother often, saying “When I was fifteen years old, she called me people on the phone to pretend to be her.” (Tan 9.) Tan
would pretend to be her mother and speak English. The mother would also tell her what to say, like: “What do you want, I come to New York to tell him in front of his boss, betray me?” (Tan 12). Tan uses the logos, or logic, to describe the main reason he wanted to pretend he was his
mother: to get the respect she thought her mother deserved. This respect was not something Tan’s mother had with her “broken” English. History emphasizes the conflict when Tan's mother would receive an object she needs in time only when Tan speaks for her. As a reader with a similar
background, my parents came from a native land and we were given less respect to not speak English correctly. Tan uses many examples to convince readers about how people should be treated enough. It mainly uses pathos that can be defined as emotional or motivational appeals. Tan
uses pathos showing the emotional struggle Tan and her mother do just to get simple things. For example, Tan's mother had a CAT scan performed when a brain tumor was diagnosed. However, CAT scans were lost and her mother was unable tomuch on it gave its English “broken”.
Luckily, Tan was able to talk to the doctor and found lost scanning. There are also many repetitions such as broken English, language, perfect English, and more to constantly remind readers of the main problem. It is easy to see that people are judges for what they say. Tan tells the reader
that “I think my mother’s English almost had an effect on limiting my chances in life.” (Tan 14) This gives readers an idea of how the language affects our daily lives. It also gives a general idea that the language is perhaps the “limits” that a person can have. The purpose of this story was to
inform readers about what Tan beliefs had developed. He found that the language approached her to those who are at her roots and her heritage by sharing with others. Although Tan’s mother had “fract” English, she approached Tan and her mother. Tan deepened the way her mother was
treated as smart since she was unable to speak English correctly. It shows readers that people often show less care for improper English speakers and avoid them. We can see that these people can be wrong, but in their perspectives, it could be seen as English speakers “rotti” do not want
to learn the language because of ignorance or too incompetent. There is an increase in discrimination that forces foreigners to be treated badly. However, acts and laws have been implemented to avoidbehavior. Tan does a great job trying to explain the struggles she and her mother faced
together. It is easy to see that Tan and her mother were driven around by others that make it look like they were given limited possibilities. Although they were pushed around, this allowed Tan to be more educated and learned the correct English. In the end, Tan provides great detail about
linguistic diversity and discrimination. This story hopes to be seen by more people and help them understand how immigrants feel in a new land, be more understanding, and not judge others by language. Work citation: “Amy Tan Interview – Academy of Success.” Academy of Achievement.
