                         Integrated Korean Workbook, Beginning I 
             
            Course objectives: 
            Basic Korean I is designed to prepare students with basic Korean language skills 
            in reading, writing, listening, and speaking while furthering their understanding 
            of  Korean  culture.  This  course  will  begin  with  an  introduction  of  the  Korean 
            alphabet and will progress to simple, situational dialogues and short passages 
            along with elementary grammar. With the knowledge gained from Basic Korean I, 
            students are encouraged to make the most of their studies in future Korean 
            courses. 
             
            About the course: 
              Quizzes     (10%)  There will be vocabulary and/or dictation quizzes. 
                                  (5 quizzes, 2 points each). 
                                  No make-up tests will be permitted, especially for the 
               Exams      (40%)  final exam. Grades are to be submitted immediately 
                                  after. (Midterm exam: 20%; final exam: 20%) 
                                  *Please notify me in case of personal emergencies.* 
             Oral Exam    (10%)  There will be 2 oral exams. 
             Homework             Workbook exercises assigned as homework must be 
            (Workbook)  (10%)  submitted every Thursday by the beginning of class. 
                                  Listening comprehension should be completed using 
                                  . 
            Attendance            A significant portion of your grade will depend on active 
                 &        (10%)  class work. Therefore, attendance is mandatory. You will 
               Class              fail the class if you are absent more than six (6) times. 
            Participation         Three (3) late arrivals will count as one (1) absence. 
                                  Throughout the semester, students will create a portfolio 
                                  related to Korean culture, society, history, etc. based on 
                                  personal interest. Students may collect articles, images, 
                                  music, etc. for the portfolio. This is not a term paper. At 
               Special    (10%)  the end of the semester, students will meet one-on-one 
               Project            with me to describe their portfolio in either English or 
                                  Korean. Exemplary projects will be asked to present 
                                  their works in front of class for extra credit. Projects will 
                                  be checked during midterms for progress and will be 
                                  collected one week before the final exam. 
                                  In groups of 3-5, students will prepare and perform a 3-
                Skit      (10%)  5 minute skit based on lessons from this course. 
                                   i.e.) “Korean Class” (parody): students re-enacted a

                                 previous Korean class in a comical way using dialogue 
                                 structures from the textbook. 
                               There are two (2) opportunities for extra credit. One (1) 
                               point will be awarded for one (1) hour; Half a point 
                               (0.5) will be awarded for half an hour (30 minutes). 
                               ①  Peer-Tutoring: A tutoring system designed to pair 
             Tutoring             students according to their abilities; one student will 
              (Extra              be expected to assist the other student. Participation 
              Credit)             credit will only be awarded if students submit a log 
                                  of covered subjects and duration of session no later 
                                  than one (1) week after the tutoring session. 
                               ②  Professor-Tutoring: Participation credit will be given 
                                  to students who review any lesson personally with 
                                  me. Appointments must be made with me one (1) 
                                  week in advance either via email or in person.
