Manser Oxford University Press, 2003 Course Description: This accelerated Chinese course is designed for students who are highly motivated to learn Chinese, since it covers in one semester the amount of material that is normally covered in two semesters at BU (LC111 & LC112). The course focuses on the four basic skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Students will master more than 1,000 Chinese characters, elementary rules of grammar, and the use of pinyin (the standard phonetic representation of Chinese). This course will cover Lesson 1 to Lesson 14 in the New Practical Chinese Reader 1, and Lesson 15 to Lesson 22 in the New Practical Chinese Reader 2. Course Requirements: (1) You are required to take all quizzes; 4 tests; and two final exams, one for LC111 and one for LC112. (2) A vocabulary quiz will be given at the end of each lesson. The two lowest quiz grades for the semester will be dropped. (3) There are 4 tests, as well as a final exam for LC111 and LC112. 1 Test 1(LC111) Lesson 1 - Lesson 6 (Book 1) Test 2(LC111) Lesson 7 - Lesson 14 (Book 1) Test 1(LC112) Lesson 15 - Lesson 20 (Book 2) Test 2(LC112) Lesson 21 - Lesson 26 (Book 2) Final exam (111):Lesson 1 - Lesson 14 (Book 1) Final exam (112):Lesson 15 - Lesson 26 (Book 2) (4) You will complete homework assignments in a workbook at the pace of our lessons. These will be turned for grading in according to assigned due dates and will make up 10% of your grade. (5) You are required to complete listening exercises at an online "language lab." DO NOT skip any class unless you have a documented illness. Unexcused absences will seriously jeopardize your course grade. Basis for Grading: Two grades will be reported to BU for each 4-credit course of Chinese, i.e., one grade for LC111 and a second grade for LC112. Your final grade for each part of this course will be assessed as follows: Attendance 10% (1 point deducted for 2 unexcused absences) Workbook 10% Quizzes 20% (2 lowest grades will be dropped) Test 1 15% Test 2 15% Final 30% 2 1.
