한글날 Korean Alphabet Day Hangul Day ● Pronounced han-gEUH-l ● Celebrated in South Korea on October 9th ● In North Korea, it is called Joseon-gul Day, and is celebrated on January 15th History of Hangul ● Before Hangul, Koreans used Chinese characters (hanja) ● Created by Sejong the Great, the fourth king of the Joseon Dynasty ○ Goal: To create a simple language that anyone can use ○ First written in Hunmin Jeongeum, “The Proper Sounds for the Education of the People” ● Faced a lot of opposition at first from the elite Modern Hangul ● Ju Si-Gyeong coined the term “hangul” which translates to “great script” ○ Established the Korean Language Research Society, or Hangul Society ○ Standardized the language ● Use of “hanja” in modern writing ○ Students in South Korea are expected to learn 1800 hanja characters by the end of high school ○ Official documents and academic papers are written in a mixture of hanja and hangul
